When you look up dance in the dictionary it often refers to the movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, and to me, dance is the emotional expression of your being.
Dance is one of the greatest art forms in America; America has caught the reputation of being a break-dancing, crumping1and even tutting2.
“I think break dancing is awesome; It's fun to watch and it's fun to attempt. I would really like to try it some day as well as crumping." said sophomore Bradley Stailey
In the state that is pretty much a country in its own, California has pretty much every dance style you can think of, thanks to eccentric status.
In the small town of Porterville, I have become accustomed to the great art form of ballet and pointe dancing.
“Dancing is the greatest art form/sport that shows emotional feelings through the moves that you show,” said sophomore Bailey Ross.
Ballet contains a classical appearance as well as pointe; it is a difficult form of dance and you must memorize more than 130 French words. Such as: Pirouettes, Arabesques, Divertissement, and Grand Jetés.
Pointe dancing may look as if the dancer is dancing on their toes, though it is actually a shoe that gives them the support. The narrow base of the shoe is also strong to cling to the bottom of a dancer’s foot.
Dance is more than a hobby for me, I am a dedicated dancer, who has made the trip to Bakersfield every Monday and Thursday for more than a year. It is a great way to stay in shape, as well as studying in the car, the way there and back.
Dancing makes me happy; it’s a great way that I can obtain scholarships as well. The striving for excellence never stops for me, I want to exceed my limits and be something different from everyone else. I am too competitive to quit dance; I crave the competition. I always want to win.
Besides being a dedicated dancer, I am a dedicated student as well. I am a straight A student and also have a zero period, as well as an eighth period. Where as the average student would have would only start from first and end at seventh. Also I am the vice president of FFA (Future Farmers of America), as well as a pro gamer.
I would have to say that dance could possibly be a career choice someday, I have attended a summer intensive in Los Angeles, where they told me that I had great skill for my age. I think that I can go somewhere with this, but I’m still deciding which is more important. Dance or School?
Outside of dance I know that I definitely know what career I want to go into, I want to be a forensics scientist. As for college, I will definitely dance for a college dance team. I have more than two options, but I can’t just pick one.
There is a dance studio in Bakersfield called Penpoint dance. It takes mainly break-dancing adolescents and even offers a Zumba class. The dance studio also has ballet and pointe classes from 6:00 – 8:30 on Mondays and Thursdays.
