Saturday afternoon, an icon of inspiration and talent was lost.
Whitney Houston, an acclaimed chart topping female artist of the 1980s and 1990s, was found unresponsive in her hotel bathroom at the Beverly Hilton in Hollywood, Calif. She was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m. and an investigation is underway for the cause of death. An autopsy was done and was concluded that there was no foul play done to Houston.
"She was one of the best female artists of the 80s era,” said Sonia Echeveste, “a voice that can never be replaced. It seems the more we continue on, I lose the icons of my teenage years. I’m shocked about her sudden death but I will remember her as a talent who shone through to making her mark in history."
Houston was last seen attending a pre-Grammy rehearsal two days before her death. It has been revealed that she was experiencing personal obstacles along with addiction to pills and alcohol. The Beverly Hills police department and Los Angeles Coroner’s office have not yet confirmed if the addictions were associated with her death.
"I grew up listening to classical music and many singers like Frank Sinatra, Aritha Franklen and Whitney Houston,” stated Albert Martinez, “Not only was Whitney Houston beautiful, but she could actually sing and didn’t rely on auto tune like most of today’s artist. Her music will continue to inspire and I will always look back and see a true master in music profession."
Houston ranked as high as many other 1980s like Madonna and Cyndi Lauper. Her single, "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" from her second album, Whitney, reached number one in twelve countries. It sold about 4.2 million copies worldwide, went platinum, and earned the title of a 1980's Gem.
Ex-husband Bobby Brown broke down on stage once he heard the news of Houston’s death. Their eighteen year old daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was hospitalized after collapsing in reaction to her mother’s death.
“I have a strong feeling that Whitney Houston died because of her addictions,” said Hannah Vehrs, “I just feel bad for her daughter, she is my age and her dad is hooked on drugs too. Whitney Houston’s music is phenomenal and never will be forgotten, she had true talent.”
Fans gathered, mourned, and laid flowers Saturday night in remembrance of Houston in front of the hotel building. Houston was said to have spent her last days quietly, making a difference in her erratic behavior just days before her death.
"I fell in love with her music after seeing the movie The Body Guard; that song ‘I Will Always Love You’ was my repeat song,” said Sylvia Vallejo, “When I was going through a rough time, her music lifted me. Somehow it was the only music that touched my heart."
