Days and nights of hard practice and rehearsal paid off when the Granite Hills Winterline competed in the first Pep and Pageantry Arts Association of Central California (P.P.A.A.C.C.) of the year.
Granite Hills’ drumline earned a first place in the senior A division, beating out West and Arvin high schools.
The competition was held on Saturday, Feb. 4, at North High School in Bakersfield, Calif. The percussion competition started at 11 a.m., with the senior A division competing first.
The P.P.A.A.C.C. is composed of the top high schools in Southern California, and Granite Hills students have been practicing extensively since December to prepare for this event.
"We have been giving our 110 percent at every practice and do not stop," said freshman Angel Esquivel. "All our hard work really showed when it can down to it. We just need to keep it up."
There were three judges at the P.P.A.A.C.C. to give scores for each performance. Each judge gave a score for a single category. The categories were: performance analysis, general effect, and visual.
Granite Hills earned a 24.80 in performance analysis, a 27.20 in general effect, and a 11.50 in visual. All the points were added up for the final score, which determined the winner. Granite Hills earned a total score of 63.50 placing fifth out of all the drumlines that competed, and had the highest general effect score out of all 12 drumlines that attended.
Granite Hills performed their show entitled "Coulrophobia," meaning the fear of clowns, featuring the song "Killer Clowns." The show featured each student dressed in a head to toe clown costume.
"This year has seemed to have started out great," stated senior pit captain Rosendo Vallejo. "Still though, first place was a surprise to me for it being our first competition."
The Granite Hills Winterline was given two minutes to set up all equipment, and six minutes for the rest of the performance, and then two minutes to clear the competition area.
If at any time a drumline went over the allotted time, a penalty was given. Fortunately, the Granite Hills Winterline finished everything in the time given and did not receive any penalties.
"I am extremely proud of how our band students are doing this year," stated director Kenny Ormonde. "This is an exciting time for our Grizzly band students. For this being the first competition of the season, I felt the students did excellent."
The next competition will be held on Saturday, Feb. 18, at Centennial High School in Bakersfield, Calif.
