Instead of staying home or leaving the city for vacation, the Granite Hills Grizzly Winterline worked throughout their vacation to get ready for their upcoming competitions.

It was busy in the band room while the members started to learn their music. They spent every night of rehearsal piecing together the difficult music for this year’s show.

"This is an amazing experience," stated freshmen Jed Hackett. "All the music is fun to play and I am making so many fond memories with some of my friends."

With a new show, there is need for a new uniform. Unfortunately, the school does not provide money for the winterline to buy their costumes. The students had to come up with the money themselves to buy the clown costumes and masks for their show.

"I feel like the school or boosters should have paid for the costumes," stated band parent Priscilla Blackburn. "Or even if they held a fundraiser just to get enough to pay for everything they needed. It would have been better."

Originally, the winterline was supposed to go to Clovis for all of their competitions, but due to overbooking, they did not get into that circuit. Now, they will be attending competitions in Bakersfield, where there will be different competition, different schools, and a different atmosphere.

There is a positive and a negative side to moving competitions. The negative side is that the members do not know what the competition will be like until the show begins. The positive side is that the overall season is a lot longer.

“It’s going to be competitive because mostly all the other schools from southern California go to the Bakersfield circuit,” said senior, Rosendo Vallejo.

In the Clovis circuit, the competitions spanned from January to the middle of March. In the Bakersfield circuit, the competitions begin in February and end in April. This gives the schools more time to perfect their shows and making the competition more pristine.

The competition is also on a different day. Instead of being on Friday, like Clovis, they are held on Saturdays. The first competition is on Feb. 4, followed by four more competitions on Feb. 18, March 3, March 31, and April 28.
