The Lady Grizzlies softball team redeemed themselves from their losing streak with a crushing victory over Woodlake High School on Tuesday, March 11. With the outrageous score of 12-0, the shutout proved that the ladies were all business.
“The girls played very well together and our bats came through, everyone that came up was a hitter today,” said coach Gabe Rodriguez said.
Standout pitcher, Sarah Blackburn, pitched a stellar game, allowing only three hits, and racking up eight strikeouts against the Lady Tigers. Blackburn finished off the game going two for three with three RBI's and a triple.
Catcher Zoë Kisling and first baseman Sabrina Hernandez both went two for three. Kisling had two singles and one RBI, while Hernandez had 3 RBI's and two singles. Marissa Martinez went two for three, adding two runs to the Lady Grizzlies' upbeat score.
Sophomore Deanna Alamillo, number two hitter, went two for four, forcing in two RBI's, while senior Kari Burrough finished off going 1 for 3. Sophomores Kisling, Martinez, and Alamillo, scored five of the 12 runs.
“The best thing about today is no one went down looking, which was very good,” continued Rodriguez. “We hit the ball hard and obviously good things happened.”
The Lady Grizzlies' offense was on fire during the bottom of the third sending eleven batters up to the plate, meaning they went through the complete batting order at least once. Alamillo sent a shot up the middle, scoring Bourrough, and pinch runner Stephanie Fletcher. Kisling, Blackburn, Hernandez, and Burrough all hit singles during the third, forcing in five runs.
“We finally started to focus again,” said Blackburn. “We were on fire, even though we were late on the bats. We were still in the game and if we continue this we should do well in league.”
During the fourth inning, the Grizzlies again found themselves in a rally, sending 12 more hitters up to the plate wanting more. Martinez hit an infield single, and ended up finding her way home by stealing on pass balls thrown by the pitcher.
Stacey Campos managed to reach first base off an error to the shortstop, and also scored off an off another error. Blackburn had the hit of the day, lacing a triple to left field, knocking in Natalie Garcia and Alamillo.
The Lady Grizzlies' finished off their game in the fifth inning because the score was run up way too far for the Lady Tigers to come back. With the liveliness of their bats, and their unstoppable defense, the Lady Tigers had no chance of creeping back.
“This should be the push that gets our ladies started, and if we keep this up, the girls should have no problem this season,” said Rodriguez, “All we have to do is try and get better, that’s all that counts.”
