A tradition in the making is coming Granite's way on Saturday, Feb. 16. Granite Hills' varsity baseball team is having their first ever alumni baseball game.
AJ Watts came up with the far-fetched idea of a game played against old baseball players. It came to mind early fall 2007 and is about to become a reality this Saturday. Taking place on the Grizzly baseball varsity field, it will all begin at 11:00 a.m. and last about three hours.
"In the past, the game we play has always been against a rival high school, but this year we're changing it up, and starting a new tradition that the other two local high schools haven't," coach Watts said.
The event is set in stone to happen on Saturday, and it will be something to remember. Not only is it a good experience for the upcoming '08 baseball team, but it is also going to be a match full of memories for the returning alumni team. All players, ranging from the years 2003 up to 2007 are invited to come back and participate, and according to Watts, a great number of players will be back to the old stomping ground they once played on.
"This is definitely going to be great and it is a great idea. It gives our kids a chance to practice, and allows the alumni to come back and relive their memories," Athletic Director Rich Rankin said.
The 2008 varsity team is extremely stoked for the event, not only because they get to play against past teammates and friends, but it is also going to get them pumped and ready for their tough upcoming season.
"I'm really looking forward to seeing my old friends, and I know that this game is going to be a lot of fun. It's also going to be pretty cool because it'll be the first time our team this year will play together, and it'll be interesting to see how it works out," player Alex Lamb said.
Watts thinks only about 20 to 25 fans will show up, just like a typical high school baseball crowd.
The game is not a fundraiser; the only purpose is to start a tradition and to also get all the boys back together.
"This game is something that I've been looking forward to. It's going to be fun playing again with our past playoff teams, and it's going to be a fun experience showing the current team how to play some baseball," alumni player Lukas Kisling said.
Andrew Garfield, Grizzlies' past power hitter and alumni returning to play in the upcoming match is really looking forward to the game, and is expecting a lot of others to return too.
"I really miss the coaches and the team spirit brought up upon our past team, and I'm really looking forward to experiencing it over again," Garfield said. "It's going to be a close game, and I think the current team is going to take a lot from it."
Coach Watts invited everyone to come out and enjoy the warm spring like weather and start the baseball season off with a bang. He is predicting that his '08 baseball team will come out on top, but after talking to the alumni, it looks like this is going to be anyone's match.
