This year’s match between the Granite Hills Grizzlies varsity soccer team and the Tulare Union Redskins was hosted at Jacob Rankin stadium. The previous match between these teams was an overtime thriller with Granite scoring three goals to win it in overtime. The Grizzlies coming into the game, had a 1-0 record; winning their first league game last Tuesday against the Monache Marauders in double overtime.

The Grizzlies started the game off with the ball and were hoping to score as well. Ten minutes into the game the Grizzlies had their first goal on a corner kick when sophomore Julian Espino headed the ball into the right side of the net. That put the Grizzlies up by 1 goal.

The Redskins had a goal of their own not long afterwards when a forward shot the ball right over the head of the Grizzlies goalie, Adrian Mejia. The score was now 1-1. The Grizzlies had another corner kick which was taken by Ivan Yanez, and Tommy Brumfield headed the ball past the Redskin’s goalie. The score now stood at 2-1, Grizzlies.

Sergio Tapia was determined to score a goal of his own after stealing the ball away from a Redskins defender and nailing the ball across the goal to put the score at 3-1, Grizzlies.

The Grizzlies went into halftime with a 3-1 lead and were hoping to come out with the same aggressive attitude.

As the second half started the Grizzly starters were still in, but some were soon to come out. Senior Josh Cisneros came into the game and would make the most of it scoring the fourth and finally goal by chipping the ball over the Redskins goalie.

Even though the Grizzlies where done scoring the Redskins were not. The Redskins had drawn a foul in the penalty box and received the first penalty of the game. The score was soon changed, 4-2 Grizzlies. Moments later the Redskins scored again passing the ball between to Grizzly defenders. A Redskin forward, placed the ball past goalie Mejia, changing the score, 4-3 Grizzlies. The whistle blew ending the game seconds after the finally goal was scored to relieve the Grizzlies of any upset that was in the making.

“We dominated the whole game, but we just gave up easy goals at the end which made it look like a close game,” said Granite Hill star defender, Louie Espino.

Granite Hills increased their league winning streak to two games, which puts them at a perfect 2-0. The Grizzlies next league game is against Delano and all support is needed for the Grizzlies to come out on top again.
