Granite Hills varsity soccer team held their fourth scrimmage against Orosi High at Jacob Rankin stadium on Wednesday, December 5, in freezing temperatures. They are also looking forward to their first win of the preseason. Granite came into the game with a 3 game losing streak hoping to break it.
The Grizzlies started the game off with a fast pace as both teams began moving the ball end to end, but neither were able to increase their chances to score. Grizzlies’ defender, Louie Espino looked like he had the first goal of the game when he dribbled the ball down field and missed his shot high left over the net. He quickly hustled back to defense to protect the penalty area. The first half would stay tied at 0-0, with neither teams able to break through each others strong defense.
"We didn't play bad as a team, we just have to play as a team and we will win many more games," proclaimed David Gonzalez.
The first half had gone and the Grizzlies where looking to try to score first, but Orosi crossed the ball in from the left corner and the ball was headed in by an Orosi forward to make the score 1 to 0.
That score wouldn't last long when the Grizzlies had their first goal when Jario Jimenes bicycled kicked the ball from in the front of the goal, which slipped by the Orsios goalie. The score was tied at 1-1.
The game was intense; both teams battling back in fourth with the ball. The game remained tied until less then 5 minutes left when the Grizzlies were looking for anyway to score.
Sophomore Sergio Tapia would save the Grizzlies from another game without a win when he received the ball in the middle of the field and shot the ball in the back of the net to score the winning goal for the Grizzlies soccer team. The word "Goal," was heard all throughout the field by Grizzlies players.
The Grizzlies never gave up when they were down so were able to come back to win the game. "We needed this win it was big win for us," said Coach Espino.
The Grizzlies have a huge game next week against there cross-town rival, the Monache Marauders and it is also Granite's first league game. All Grizzly students and fans should come and support the varsity boy’s soccer team next week
