The goal of a city championship has fizzled down for this season's Granite Hills boys varsity basketball. The Marauders out matched the Grizzlies 52-35, on Friday, January 25.
On Friday, Coach Bud Luther, along with his assisted coaches Robert Haynes, Robert Preada, came out on to the court with an eight man roster that consisted of two junior varsity players. Nevertheless, the team was fired up and ready to battle the Marauders until the last basket could be made.
"I really thought we had a chance to beat Monache this time; I guess we are just going to have to work harder during practices and improve some more before the season is over," said sophomore Matt Camargo.
In the first quarter the Grizzlies stunned the Marauders they had a 10-2 lead. But, costly turnovers and a few lucky fast breaks by the blue and gold Marauders gave them a 12-18 lead by the end of the first quarter.
Curtis Keen started the second quarter off for the Grizzlies by sinking a three pointer with just a few seconds remaining on the shot clock.
Felipe Andrade used his height in the second half as he took the ball to the rim multiple times. Junior Kameron Pryor put in one assist for Andrade during the second half.
Late in the second quarter the Marauders gave the Grizzlies a break as their mouths cost them five technical shots where Camargo got his chance to shine. Camargo shot 100 percent from the free throw line, bringing up Granite's spirits. Monache still managed to keep the lead, 29-26.
In the third quarter, Isaac Martinez helped out his team by playing great defense and posting up a few quick lay ups.
Camargo and Keen added six points to the board; which helped keep the Marauders on their toes the rest of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Marauders used their outside shooters constantly and picked up their defense in order to keep a lead against the Grizzlies, 52-35.
With just minutes left the Grizzlies did their best to try and make a come back against the Marauders, but it just couldn't be done.
"The boys played really good and I am glad they tried their best. We ahd a team tonight; five of our eight guys had points tonight and we are now able to spread the court out by passing the ball," said Coach Luther.
The Grizzlies have yet to win a game, but the season is far form over with. Five games are left, two of which are home, and a victory is still a goal for the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies go on the road to play Tulare Union, on Wednesday, January 28. The next home game will be against Cesar Chavez, Friday, February 1.
