Carved By The Cardinals

Last Season we said goodbye to: Jerry Abasta, Anthony Holt, David Bratton, Preston Black, Raul Reyes, and even to Coach Rankin. But with a new group of kids to work with Coach Bud Luther showed Don Perales’ Lindsay Cardinals how the Grizzlies play defense. Working along side junior varsity coach Robert Hayens and freshman coach Robert Pareda this years Grizzly basketball players have put their work in since they started practice erratically throughout the summer.

On Tuesday, November 27,they showed their work off as they played a great game on paper but sadly lost against the Lindsay Cardinals 29-49.

The first quarter for the Grizzlies showed how we could attack the key at anytime or swing the ball to sophomore Matt Camargo at the elbow for some easy 3’s.

Michael Jeff ran through his defenders and hits a reverse lay-up not once but twice in the game.

Despite this success, Cardinals’ Daniel De La Fuente and Brian Gonzalez kept the game close thorough-out the first half always keeping the score tied up with their deadly red-zone game.

The second quarter showed how the Grizzlies could take the plays learned at practice and played their game at the same time as Curtis Keen and Nathan Cordova powered the ball through the key multiple times letting the Cardinals feel their presence on the court.

From here the game went down hill as the Cardinal Jordan Lavo picked apart the Grizzlies Zone Defense.

At the half the score 16-16.

During the half time former players Jerry Abasta and Peter Carter came to see their former school to see their team play. They both agreed the program has improved a lot since the schools first opening.

Coach Richard Rankin said, “It’s been eighteen years since I have sat in the stands at a basketball game and its new feeling I have to get used to its great to see how far the guys I have coached since they were freshmen have come along.”

Despite the praise the second half was nothing the Grizzlies could brag about as the Cardinals maneuvered past their defenders to rack up the score to a 29-49 victory over our Grizzlies.

“This is only the first game and the boys have a lot of talent” said one spectator, and he is right new comers to the varsity team are sophomores Robbie Scruggs and Matt Camargo played well as Scruggs had at least half a dozen rebounds on the night and Camargo rivaling junior Curtis Keen in points scored during the game. Other newcomers Tomas Valdez and Manuel Herrera have worked very had and are indisputably couple of the fastest players on the team.

“This year Grizzlies have their great work ethic and they always impress me.” said Coach Luther.

The Grizzlies had a rocky start but after seeing the progress that has been made the Arvin Bears should be weary as they travel to the den of the Grizzlies on Monday, December 3 so go out and watch and check the Grizzly Gazette for all your boys basketball news.
