Massacre at Monnache
Taylor Garlow | 12/19/07 | Boys Basketball

Have the Grizzlies ever beat Monache? The answer to that question is not in a long time. Just like last year, and the year before, history repeated itself once again on Tuesday, December 18 as Coach Gary Miller and his Marauders murdered the Grizzlies 61-19.

The game started off great for the Grizzlies, but this only lasted a few minutes. The Grizzlies took a 2 point lead early on with Nathan Cordova denying the Marauders the key for easy lay-ups.

The Marauders (with their 714 API score posted all over the gym) soon grew wise to the Grizzlies defense and began driving the baseline and kicking out to the elbow for easy 3's.

"It was sad," said many fans at the half with the Grizzlies down by more than a dozen baskets.

The second half wasn't much better as they only scored 11 more points while the Marauders almost tripled their half-time score ending the game 61-19.

Granite’s Coach Luther said after the game, "We didn't come to play; we had no heart; and with players showing up to practice at their convenience, we can't run the plays we want, not to mention the rumors of losing players to ineligibility. It just seems we’re going backwards [rather] than forwards."

Heading into the locker room an unknown Marauder said, "They are the same east side school as last year.”

Granite’s junior guard, Curtis Keen, had one of his lowest scoring career games with 6 points, while Marauders’ Ulysses Madrigal and Max Catalina had 15 points on the night.

Former players Anthony Holt, David Bratton, and Raul Reyes, all agreed "this year's Grizzlies played without heart tonight, and they just gave the game to Monache within the first five minutes."

Eric Taylor said, "We played terrible; we needed to step our game up,  but instead we were just selfish, and we didn't want it as bad as the Monache did."

The Grizzly players hope they can come off this loss with heads held high and show how they play ball at the Polly Wilhelmsen Tournament on December 26.
