On Friday, February 1 the Cesar Chavez Titians left Porterville with a 35-45 victory over our Granite Hills boys varsity basketball team.

“The Titans were fast and big. Our defense is improving, but we need work on our shooting. We need to be able to shoot under pressure,” stated varsity coach Bud Luther.

The Grizzlies started off the second quarter down 8-15 with the Titians assisting each other for easy lay ups.

The Grizzlies sagged back and let the Titians shoot off target 3’s, which was most effective in the second quarter, where our big men were able to post up multiple times for quick lay ups. The clock dwindled down to seconds as Felipe Andrade assists Isaac Martinez for 2 ending the half 20-28.

“With a better defense and less turnovers we would have walked away with a victory, but we added another loss,” said Carmargo after the game.

Kamron Pryor and Curtis Keen kept the game in reach for the Grizzlies as they were able to penetrate through the key and get the occasional shot outside in the second half.

Matt Carmargo and Zack Agulair added a few shots to the score, always keeping it a close game, but the Titians came out ahead in the end with a 35-45 victory.

“The boys are very hard working and are constantly improving,” said freshman Rebekah Wildermuth.

The Grizzlies have yet to win a league game and have only 3 games left with an away game in Delano on Monday, February 4 and the last home game on Thursday, February 7, so go out and support our Grizzlies and check the Grizzly Gazette for all of your latest sports news.
