Granite Hills High School wrestling team won against Delano High on Wednesday, January 16. With the meet going down to the final battle, and Granite pulled through and won 37-33.
With a dominating performance by Jacob Cannon, who won 16-1, and also Micky Panthavane, who won in the first period with a pin.
Granite started off down in points through the first few matches. But the team never lost hope and continued to battle back, through pins and winning their matches by points. Granite showed that with their young talent they can still get it done. Coach K was able to hype up the players and motivate them throughout the meet. All of this motivation and team work pulled the wrestling team to a victory over the Delano High Tigers.
With wins by Sal Madrigal, Jacob Cannon, Micky Panthavane, ‘Charcoal’, Effrin Gonzalez, and Hector the Grizzlies earned enough points to beat the tigers in one of the Grizzlies few home matches this season. With all the matches ending due to time except for Jacob Cannon and Micky Panthavane, Mickey was able to pin his opponent via a cradle; the match lasted less than 50 seconds, which is very impressive.
“He was very dominate,” said Manuel Sierra, “As a team we did very well, and we did better than I expected we would.” Hector earned the last five points to push Granite over the edge and win the meet.
Granite Hills next home match will be on January 31 against crosstown rival Porterville High. Poterville is 5-0 currently in the Eastern Yosemite League and Granite will be looking for the big upset.
