Baseball is coming back

As the spring of 2008 rolls up on us, so does baseball season. Baseball, America's past time, and a part of Granite Hills sports.

Last season the Grizzlies finished over .500 during the season. By winning half of their games, the Grizzlies become eligible for the Valley playoffs. The Grizzlies went to the playoffs last year, but were knocked out early.

Some veterans from last year's team have moved onto play in college, are Robbie Lamb, whop plays for Cornell in Iowa, Preston Black plays for College of the Sequoias in Visalia, and Andrew Garfield, who is hoping to play for Cuesta in San Luis Obisbo.

Although the Grizzlies lost several seniors from last years team, this doesn't have to be a bad thing," sophomore Andrew Priego said. "Us young guys get to step in and show people we can hang with the other schools."

This can be a positive for this year's team, with some young energetic kids jumping into play.

And for the people who wonder if there is still leadership on the team, the remaining seniors this season, such as catcher Steven Dummar, first baseman Kyle Forbes and outfielder Ernie Rodriguez will prove to be leaders on and off the field.

The Grizzlies were able to defeat the cross-own Marauders last year at their own field, which was a big moment for the team, because Monache has been the best team in Porterville for the past few years.

The Grizzlies will face off against very tough teams this year in Porterville High School and Tulare Western High School. The Panthers have a new head coach this season and the Grizzlies hope they can turn this into an advantage for them, because he has never faced the Grizzlies squad. Western, who is almost always the power house of the EYL, will face off against the Grizzlies and they will hopefully be able to knock them off their throne of champions this season, and take their place as the number one team.

With Coach A.J. Watts entering this fourth year as head coach, things are looking up for this year's team. The Grizzlies plan on returning to the playoffs this season, and this year staying their longer, and possibly winning it all.
