ranite Hills varsity boys soccer opened their first game of the season at Jacob Rankin stadium against their cross-town rival, the Monache Marauders. Both times the teams met twice last year, with the Grizzlies came out on top winning both games. The Grizzlies were looking to do the same this year as well.
The game kicked off with both teams pumped up and energized to play. The Marauders started the first half off the game and moved quickly passing the ball. Soon the first goal of the game was be scored when Monache's forward, Jose Rodriguez, would have the ball right in front of the goal and shot it pass Grizzly's goalie Adrian Mejia. Monache was up by a goal but the Grizzlies weren't going to let that get them down.
A corner kick was award later in the game to the Grizzlies and they took advantage of it with Sergio Tapia heading the ball right in the back of the net. This was the Grizzlies first goal of the game, 1-1. Monache came right back with another goal by forward Rodriguez. With the Marauders up 2-1 the first half would stay that way.
The Grizzlies were down coming out of the half, but never seemed to lose their faith in each other. Later on, forward Ivan Yanez would strike the ball at the Monache goalie which would deflect and Tommy Brumfield would be there to head the ball in to tie the score, 2-2.
The game would be intense for both teams; neither team letting down their defense. At the end of the second half the game was tied up at 2-2 forcing the teams to head to overtime.
In high school overtime games the teams play two 10 minutes halves and if neither team is able to score the game results in a draw. No goals were scored for either team throughout the overtime.
The second and final overtime started and the Grizzlies were dominating. Tapia received a cross pass and dribbed the ball with the side of his cleat right by the Marauder’s goalie.
The Grizzlies were able to keep the score 3-2 in the end, starting EYL 1-0.
"It is a good way to start our season and it’s the way we need to be playing," said Coach Espino.
The Grizzlies hope to extend their winning strike this Thursday, December 13 against Tulare Union.
