he last game of the season for the Lady Grizzlies was finally underway on Monday, February 4, at Jamison Stadium. Everything the Lady Grizzlies worked for came down to game against cross-town rivals, the Porterville Panthers. In the end, Landy Panthers won 4-1.
"Since it was our last game, I really thought we could win this one," said Granite's Deanna Alamillo. "I think we have improved as a team and maybe next year will be different."
Granite controlled the field for the first few minutes of the game as Porterville struggled to pick up their defense.
Senior Mari Garcia played her final game as a Lady Grizzly, but wouldn't go down without a fight. She took a shot at Porterville goalkeeper, Natalie Gomez and the rebound was picked up by teammate Jazmin Manriquez who scored against Gomez. Granite kept the score at 1-0, for just a few minutes.
In the middle of the first half, Porterville received a penalty kick and Heather Hicks scored against Granite Hills goalkeeper Zoe Kisling.
Porterville 's and Granite's offenses played a grueling first half, but the score stayed 1-1.
The whistle blew for the second half and both teams came out fired up for hopefully countless minutes of pure passing, dribbling, and scoring. The Lady Panthers emerged much stronger in the second half and mid-fielder, Megan Harrison scored on Kisling, giving the Lady Panthers a 2-1 lead.
Just a few minutes later Hicks dribbled past Granite's defense and scored for the second time, 3-1.
The rest of the second half would be an uphill battle for the Lady Grizzlies as they attempted many shoots on Gomez, but none were successful.
But, Porterville didn't get comfortable with a 3-1 lead, Hicks pushed her hardest and scored again for Porterville. Porterville controlled most of the field and shut down Granite's offense, keeping the score 4-1.
"We are still growing as a team," said Granite's Gabe Rodriguez. "Tonight's game was tough and we just couldn't finish it off."
Kisling finished the final game of her sophomore season with five saves.
The final whistle blew around 6:00 p.m. and the Lady Panthers claimed a 4-1 win against the Lady Grizzlies. The Lady Grizzlies finished off the season with a record of 10-13, 4-8 EYL, which means that they did not qualify for playoffs.
"I think this was a growing year for us and I know that next year will be a completely different story," said Granite's Katie Taylor. "I can't wait until next year."
