Baseball, baseball, baseball - Anything else?

Ah, the sweet smell of victory could not have been come at a better time for alumni baseball players, ranging from the years 2003 up to 2007. The first ever alumni baseball game was held this Saturday, Feb. 16, and the group of returning players took a rewarding win at 6-2, over this year's varsity baseball team.

"We played pretty hard today," sophomore Alex Lamb said. "This game was really all about fun and I think it was a perfect way to start of the season, even though we lost."

The scrimmage was originally planned out to be nine innings, but with a three hour time limited the scrimmage went a full 10 innings.

For this year’s alumni team, Mikey Colunga started on the mound. He didn't give up any runs against the varsity team. And he had numerous strike-outs. For this year’s varsity team, junior Jason Tredway started on the mound. Tredway pitched two innings, he didn't give up any runs, and had four strikeouts to end his day.

The first two innings stayed tied, 0-0.

In the third and fourth inning defense couldn't have been played better by both teams. Junior Thomas Velasquez took the mound and had one strikeout. Nevertheless, Colunga managed to bring one run home; giving the alumni's a 1-0 advantage.

"We played really good for some of us not touching the ball in a year,” Lukas Kisling said.

Sophomore Andrew Preigo took the mound for the fifth, sixth, and seventh inning.

In the fifth and sixth inning the alumni's began to really hit the ball. Jacob Gudoy scored for the alumni. But, senior Steven Dummar wasn't one to give up so easily. On a pass ball Dummar used his speed and slid into home. Making the score 2-1, at the bottom of the sixth.

The seventh inning was nothing but a pitchers duel. Neither team could get anything going offensively.

Going into the eight inning coach AJ Watts took a brief break to dedicate the new third base dugout to former head coach Raul Lopez. Lopez was the second longest coach at Granite Hills and is one of the most appreciated.

The applause given for Lopez could basically be described as endless.

"He did so much work," Watts said. "The field was in terrible shape and the amount of time, effort, and donations Raul got was great. I thought it would be a nice thing to do for him."

During the eight inning junior Tyler McFadden shook things up a bit. On a pass ball McFadden came home, making the score 6-2.

No record of who scored the last four runs for the alumni was available.

"We played well as a team, we just couldn't hit," Tredway said.

Sophomore Alex Lamb maybe one of the younger players on the team, but regardless of that Lamb stayed fearless on the mound. Altogether Lamb gave up four runs in the eighth, ninth, and tenth innings.

"It was a scrimmage; we wanted to get out guys in live situations," Watts said. "The event meant a lot to me and hopefully to some of the other players. It was basically a great turn out."

Thanks for the article on the alumni baseball game. It was a great day to see the former players and their families. It was a lot of fun to spend the day catching up with what everyone was doing now and, most importantly, to watch a great game of baseball. Thanks Coach Watts for getting everyone together for a fun day!
