The Granite Hills varsity baseball team protected their home turf on Friday, April 4, and led the entire game against the Delano High School Tigers.  Aided by excellent pitching from Tomas Velasquez, the Grizzlies secured a 6-2 win. Their new record for league is 1-3.

The Tigers opened up the first inning with all three batters out at first. The Grizzlies didn’t waste any time and later got a three run lead at the bottom of the first. First up to bat was Adam Castillo who hit a single. Although Alex Lamb got out at first, he enabled Castillo to steal second.

Tyler McFadden hit a beautiful line drive that got him to first base, and brought Castillo home.  Ernie Rodriguez hustled to first after Delano’s shortstop dropped a ground ball, while McFadden was able make it across home plate.  Rodriquez stole second and third base and pass balls, and made it home on an error by the Tigers.

Final score of the first inning was 3-0, Grizzlies.

Again the Grizzlies executed at the top of the second and did not allow any runners on base.

Velasquez got to first on a walk and proceeded to steal second after the Delano catcher let a pitch past him. Castillo smashed the ball to the left of center field, earning him a double and an RBI.

The Grizzlies topped off the second inning 4-0.

The Tigers finally got on base third inning.  One runner was knocked home, but the Grizzlies did not allow for any further damage.

Shortstop Lamb threw to catcher Steven Dummar to protect home plate and secure the third out.

Left fielder, Jason Tredway, hit a single to center field, but got out on an attempt to get a big lead to second base.  No other Grizzlies were able to get on base this inning.  The third inning ended 4-1, Grizzlies still in the lead.

The top of the forth the Tigers tacked on another run to their score.

Velasquez struckout the last batter and prevented any runners on base to score.  The first two Grizzlies batters, Matt Camargo and Kyle Forbes each got to first on a walk.

A battle between Camargo and the pitcher became a point of comical relief for the fans at the game as the Delano pitcher just couldn’t allow Camargo to steal third base.

After a relentless effort, the pitcher was successful at getting him out at second base.
Castillo thereafter earned another RBI after making first on an error, bringing Forbes home.

The Grizzlies finished the forth inning in the lead 5-2.

In the top of the fifth the Grizzlies did not allow any runners to make it home.  At the bottom of the fifth, McFadden got to first on a walk but took one for the team after Rodriguez hit a single right behind second base, making an easy out at second.  Next up to bat, Tredway, smashed one over the fence to score his third home run of the season.

The final score of the fifth was 6-2.

Velasquez, who pitched the entire game, had a total of five strikeouts. McFadden, Rodriguez, and Tredway each scooped up an RBI. Sophomore Castillo earned two RBIs.

Tredway smashed another one over the fence to add to his junior year record; Tredway has a total of three home runs so far this season.

“I just took advantage of a fastball,” Tredway said.
