Lady Grizzlies sweep past the Cardinals
Ashley Morrison| 11/29/07 | Girls Basketball

The Lady Grizzlies basketball team entered the doors of the gym ready and pumped to play their first game on their home court. Entering the doors the ladies began to size up their competition, Lindsay High School Cardinals.. A game full of turnovers, fouls, and missed shots was about to be played.

At 6:00 pm November 27, Jordan Morillo, from Lindsay and Angela Rispoli, from Granite set up for jump ball. Rispoli won the jump ball, starting the Grizzlies off with possession. Quraya Fuston, Granite’s point guard, got the ball after the jump ball and attempted a lay-up. With no offensive rebound, Granite allowed Lindsay to take the ball down the court to score. With the first quarter coming close to an end and the score being Lindsay up 0-2; Granite’s Marykate McAlevey intercepted the ball and scored, tying the quarter up 2-2. That wasn’t enough for Granite; they were just getting fired up. After scoring another basket, Granite’s Stephanie Fletcher, took a shot from the 3 point line and sunk it. The Cardinals, however, decided that they weren’t done for the quarter and Stevi Ibarra scored the last basket, leaving the quarter score 7-6.

With the first quarter out of the way and all the nerves almost gone, both teams got out of their huddles and back onto the court ready to play. Lady Grizzly Vanessa Ortiz scored the first shot of the quarter, which would be only one of the four that they still had to come. After Lindsay got the ball back and turned it over, Fuston made an assist to McAlevey. The Lady Grizzlies were fired up and they were HOT! Ortiz scored yet again and was followed by a three pointer from Fletcher. Rispoli ended the half getting an offensive rebound and putting it up for the shot.

The first half was now out of the way and the score was Granite up 22-7. Both teams reentered the gym with looks of competitiveness on their faces, only two eight minute quarters were left. Starting right away, Granite’s Fuston drove the ball down the center and scored. The heat the Lady Grizzlies showed in the first half was still there. The Lady Cardinals however, weren’t about to just give up and not try, Ibarra got the ball and put it up for a shot and it was good. Getting the ball down the court Granite ran their offense and found Fletcher, who hit her 3. Lindsay was now ready to start a rally; Morillo got the ball and put it up scoring for the Cardinals.

With Granite up 30-22, both teams went back onto the court. Granite began to get frustrated and Lady Cardinals noticed this and began to press the Grizzlies. Lindsay’s press was too much for Granite and the fire that Granite once had, at the beginning, was beginning to be put out. However, after an intense quarter of the Cardinals fighting to get back into the game, the Lady Grizzlies still pulled off a well deserved victory. The final score was Grizzlies 42-40.

The night ended with a victory for Granite and a good battle from Lindsay. Team captain of the Grizzlies stated her point of view on the game, ‘It was a good game although we should of won really hard, we had them beat and we barley won by two points, we need to work on a lot,” Fuston.
