ix-foot-tall freshman, Emily Fechner, is the starting center for the varsity girl’s basketball team at Granite Hills High School. Fechner’s height was a big reason she was promoted to varsity, but not the only reason, Coach Gary Stoddard also noticed that she had a shot. “Emily is averaging a double double; we haven’t had a post player do that since Britney Brown,” stated Stoddard.
Fechner got introduced to basketball in the fifth grade when Mrs. Alvarez, her teacher at Los Robles, told her about National Junior Basketball. Fechner joined, and has since been dominating down low, constantly rejecting shots from fellow post players.
“Emily’s all around aspect on life has changed, since basketball,” stated Fechner’s mom, Arlene Barmer.
Outside of basketball, Fechner is an average teenage girl. On the weekends she likes to go shopping and hangout with her friends.
“Emily is a dork. She is outgoing and doesn’t care what other people think of her; the whole team loves her,” stated teammate Jasmine Gaspar.
After Fechner’s four years of high school are over, she hopes to get a scholarship for Fresno State and continue her basketball career there.
“Emily has the chance to take basketball to the next level, if she puts the time into it,” stated coach Stoddard.
Come out and support Emily on her journey to become one of the dominate post players in the league, see her swat other post players and out score most of them.
“I like to be aggressive and watch the girls get all mad because they thought they were all good,” stated Fechner.
