Being a senior is...exciting! Krystal Wayne | 4/15/08 | Opinion
ith our impending graduation less then a quarter away, anxiousness and excitement are knocking on every graduating senior's door. Sometimes I catch myself day dreaming the feel of that diploma in hand, surrounded by my closest friends and family. I then laugh at myself for letting my mind wander on such a trivial little feeling. I realized now that that 'trivial little feeling' is more than little and much more than just trivial: it's my future. It is the feeling that I have waited my whole life for, and now I find myself, along with my peers, very much excited.
However, it is not just the looming idea of a whole crowd watching that we seniors find exciting. It is opening the door to adulthood and walking through that is the most exciting thought of all. The idea that we are now the craftsman of the clay of our lives is an exciting thought. We are in control!
Do not let me mislead you, reader, for, though my other editorials suggest otherwise, there is more to being a senior then just school related functions and feelings. Being a senior is not at all completely negative, it is surely more positive in itself than any of the negative counterparts that accompany the title.
The greatest thing about being a senior is the opportunities that accompany the grade. Seniors are given countless opportunities to socialize and have fun. Senior Ditch Day is an example of this great phenomenon. Seniors are given permission to leave town and experience their own mini adventure. Most seniors usually go to the same place and hang out together. Senior Ditch Day is a perfect opportunity for fun and socialization with other graduating seniors.
The best example of how fun it is to be a senior is Grad Night. Grad Night is a night at Disneyland in Anaheim where seniors from all over the state come to celebrate their last night as a senior of high school. There are games, rides and shopping. Plus, a night away from Porterville without your parents is every Grizzly's dream. Fortunately, as seniors, we are able to achieve that dream, with an included package of severe fun!
Also, as a senior, we are given more opportunities for enjoyment, both by our parents and activities presented by the school. Students are given more leverage for late night rendezvous by their parents, and friends are creating new and improved ways of spending time together and having fun. Mainly, its a very exciting year.
The impending graduation may be the most exciting of all. With grad only eight weeks away, seniors are becoming anxious and very excited. We are excited about becoming an adult; we are excited of walking down the walkway and receiving our diplomas, officially completing the largest task of our lives. Seniors are excited about a summer of fun without the expectation and requirement of returning to rigorous schoolwork.
So, readers, do not let my previous negative editorials make you dread your senior year. Though being a senior is not all rainbows and gumdrops it is not completely bitter either. It’s more like chocolate, bitter before you add the sugar, than something that everyone enjoys and grows to love.
