How it feels to be a second semester senior
Krystal Wayne | 1/28/08 | Opinion

Many people ask me, “How does it feel knowing that your high school graduation is only months away?” Well, truth be told, there are a lot of strangely mixed emotions running rampant in my head.

First and foremost would be fear. I am terrified of graduating. Since kindergarten my life has been strictly mapped: go to school, come home, do homework and chores, then go to sleep. Weekends, of course, contained the activities that were actually enjoyable for a person my age (usually social events).. Mainly, after graduation, I am the one that will control the schedule.
I will be fully responsible for everything I do. Though I can handle that, the thought scares me. Also, the fear of “What if I didn’t get in?” or “What if I didn’t get the scholarship?” scares every senior to wits end. Then there’s the walking across the stage. That causes major fear. I am almost certain that every senior is wondering “What happens if I fall?” That very thought strikes many seniors as dreadfully frightening.

Secondly is anticipation. I can’t wait to get out of school and experience true freedom. I just dream of waking up and not having to worry about school. Then, of course, I remember college. I’m racking with nerves when it comes to the anticipation and patience of waiting for acceptance letters and scholarships.

A lot of seniors are now waiting impatiently for the end. We do, of course, contract the deadly disease of senioritis. We feel lazy, and just want the schooling to be over so we can get on with our lives.

Lastly, there is excitement: excitement that we made it, that we are now adults, with full privileges and ability to experience fully our lives. No more curfews, no more rules, no more standardized testing, and no more homework!

These are the many feelings of the high school second semester senior.
