Republican front runner, Mitt Romney, swept the Republican primary in Michigan on January 16. He prevailed over Huckabee and McCain with 39 percent of the vote..

After candidates for the presidency canvassed the state of Michigan for the last week, state residents made their way to the polls in cold, snowy weather to cast their votes in the Presidential Primary. This time Republican candidate Mitt Romney prevailed over his opponents John McCain and Mike Huckabee with his home state voting him as the preferred candidate of the party.  

 
“It’s a victory of optimism over Washington-style pessimism,” Romney stated. “The people of Michigan said they believe in someone who is going to fight for them” (AP).  

 
This win for the former Massachusetts governor was said to be the key to his remaining competitive in this presidential race, and former state legislator Bill Ballenger predicted that Romney would be “a dead man walking” if he didn’t finish ahead of the other contenders (CQPolitics.com). He was posed with questions concerning his capability to be productive on a national level after coming in second to Huckabee in the Iowa caucuses and to McCain in New Hampshire, even though he campaigned a great deal in both states.  

 
Romney displayed confidence throughout the weekend commenting that he believed Michigan would indeed vote for a Romney again as they had done in the past when his father was elected governor for three terms during the 1960s.    

The candidate attracted voters by assuring Michigan’s citizens that he would give more attention to their state economy than any other contender on the ballot. Michigan has recently been suffering from a downturn in the auto industry and has the highest unemployment rate in the nation for the preset time: 7.4 percent.  

 
He also used a degree of pathos during his canvassing of the state. During rallies he would relate stories about his summer vacations as a boy, and how he met his wife in high school. He also took a special trip to pose beneath his deceased father’s portrait and even located his first grade teacher and drew her out of the crowd to speak to reporters and their photographers.  

 
Michigan, who normally holds its primaries in February, broke from the mold this year by holding its election in February which had both advantages and disadvantages for the citizenry. Because the state “broke the rules” by holding primaries before February 5, the Democratic party withdrew it’s candidates from the caucus entirely, and the Republican party cut its number of candidates on the ballot from 60 to 30. Ironically enough, Michigan wanted to hold its primaries earlier so that voters would have more options when voting for a candidate to represent their political party.  

 
Romney will now be moving on to campaign in South Carolina which opens its polls this Saturday, December 19. Other primary Republican candidates such as McCain, Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, and Fred Thompson will also continue to campaign in South Carolina and Florida for those states’ presidential primaries.

Después que los candidatos para la presidencia solicitaron el estado de Michigan por la semana pasada, los residentes dirigieron su paso a los sondeos en la tempestad fría por la nevada, para tomar parte en el Presidential Primary.  Esta vez el candidato republicano Mitt Romney prevaleció sobre sus oponentes John McCain y Mike Huckabee con su estado natal votándolo como el candidato preferido del partido.

“Es una victoria de optimismo sobre el estilo de pesimismo de Washington,” declaro Romney.  “Las personas de Michigan dijeron que creen en una persone quien va a pelear por ellos” (AP).

Se dijo que esta Victoria para el gobernador anterior de Massachusetts fue la llave para quedarse competitivo en esta carrera presidencial, y el registrador anterior de estado Bill Ballenger predijo que Romney seria “un hombre muerto caminando” si no terminaba adelante de los otros contendientes.  Fue colocado con preguntas concerniendo su capacidad para ser productivo en un nivel nacional después de terminar segundo a Huckabee en el comité de Iowa y el McCain en New Hampshire, aunque hizo mucha campaña en ambos estados.

Romney demostró confianza a través del fin de semana comentando que creía que Michigan verdaderamente daría su voto a Romney otra vez al igual que han hecho en el pasado cuando su padre fue elegido gobernador por tres términos durante los 1960s.

El candidato atrajo los votadores por medio de asegurando a los ciudadanos de Michigan que daría mucha mas atención a la economía de su estado que cualquier otro contendiente en la votación.  Recientemente, Michigan ha estado sufriendo de una baja en la industria de autos y tiene la tasa de desempleo mas alta en la nación por el tiempo presente: 7.4 porciento.

También apeló a las emociones de la audiencia al solicitar al estado.  Durante reuniones relataba historias de sus vacaciones de verano cuando era niño, y como conoció a su esposa en la preparatoria.  También tomo tiempo especial para posar con un retrato de su padre que ha fallecido y hasta localizo a su maestra de primer grado y la cíngulo en una multitud para que hablara con los reporteros y sus fotógrafos.

Michigan, quien regularmente lleva acabo el Presidential Primary en febrero, quebró su molde este año cuando llevo acabo sus elecciones en enero el cual tuvo ventajas al igual que desventajas para los ciudadanos.  Porque el estado “quebro las reglas”  al llevar acabo el Presidential Primary antes de el 5 de febrero, el partido democrático retiro sus candidatos del comité enteramente, y el partido republicano corto su numero de candidatos en la votación de 60 a 30.  Irónicamente, Michigan quería que el Presidential Primary se llevara acabo temprano para que los votadores tuvieran más opciones cuando votaran para un candidato para representar su partido político.

Romney ahora seguirá haciendo campaña en South Carolina cual abre sus sondeos este sábado el 19 de diciembre.  Otros candidatos republicanos primarios tal como McCain, Huckabee, Rudy Giuliani, y Fred Thompson también continuaran haciendo campaña en South Carolina y Florida para los Presidential Primaries de ambos estados.
