Meeting offers seniors a pre-graduation checklist

It won’t be very long until Granite Hills seniors have to wake up and smell the coffee; with the responsibilities that come along with graduation brewing -only a couple months away- now is the time for them to begin marking up their calendars. So, while freshmen, sophomores and juniors received an assembly -featuring a motivational speaker- on Friday, the Granite Hills class of 2008 came together to tune into an informational meeting about everything -from prom and Grad Night to scholarships and college orientation dates.

Granite Hills staff members, Sherri Shannon, Catherine May, Ann Garner and Rebecca Chavez each took a turn at the podium to make their announcements about the important opportunities and requirements for seniors to consider taking part in over next couple of months.

Some seniors are on the borderline for graduation, where their pending fourth quarter grades will determine whether or not they will be able to cross the stage on their June 6 graduation. In the same pool are the students who have not yet passed the California High School Exit Exam.

The test will be offered for these students to retake on May 6 and 7, in the Granite Hills cafeteria. In addition, CAHSEE readiness workshops will be offered for three consecutive Saturdays, from April 19 to May 3.to help them prepare for the test. The workshops will total in 18 hours of lesson, divided into 6 hours a day. Completion of the 18 hours will amount in 1 high school credit. Jeff Ward will teach the math section and Maggie Whitley will teach the English section.

“It’s really serious If they haven’t passed [the CAHSEE], they really need to go to those workshops,” Shannon said, student counselor.

 Students who do not pass the CAHSEE will not receive a high school diploma, but will receive a certificate of completion.

“You want a high school diploma. For financial aid you need a high school diploma. The military prefers a high school diploma,” Garner said, career center technician. “If you’re so close, you really want to give it an extra push.”

Media Director Catherine May also stepped up to the podium to remind students that late or lost library books must be returned or paid for by the last week of May.

“Seniors: get those books in, before you go to the office and they don’t give you your tickets to cross the stage,” May said. “Go through your closets. Don’t make me come to your house.”

Porterville College is offering an on-site registration, Tuesday, May 6, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m., to students who have already taken their assessment test and attended an orientation. On May 21, at 4:00p.m., an assessment test will be held, with an orientation on the following day.

“For those of you who have not taken the assessment test or gone to the orientation, this is a great opportunity for you to go to PC,” Garner said.

PC is offering a scholarship in $400 to qualified applicants who have received at least a 3.0 cumulative Grade Point Average. On June 10, 11 and 12, PC Extended Opportunity Program Services is offering a college readiness program to incoming students from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This event will provide incoming students important information about their education at PC.

Students may also qualify for a stipend on their book payments in the fall semester. Most Granite Hills students are eligible for this service, Garner said.

The deadline for FAFSA applications is on June 30. Students who complete the FAFSA will receive a Student Aid Report in the mail, notifying them of whether or not they qualify to receive financial aid.

“So that will take about 40 minutes out of your life. It’s not too hard,” Garner said, as she encouraged those who have not yet completed the form to make the time for it.

Garner will be taking 27 students to College of the Sequoias for an all-day event, including an assessment, orientation, and tour and counseling appointments. With four seats left, those interested may sign up in the career center. Those who have already signed up must complete and return their permission slips as soon as possible to secure a seat, Garner said.

The Prom theme for this year will be Moonlight Rondavu. Tickets are $30 per person. The prom will be held at Nuckol’s Ranch, located at 13144 Road 216.

“It’s a thing you’re going to remember for the rest of your life, so get a group of people together and go to prom,” Chavez, Associated Student Body advisor.

For Grad Night, this year, students will attend a trip to Disneyland, on June 5. Tickets are $88 each, and include one free meal and voucher pass for Disneyland or California Adventure Park. Seniors will meet at Granite Hills at 3:00 p.m. and leave the school by 4:00 p.m., to arrive at the park by 9:00. The total cost to attend the trip is $130. This includes the student transportation fee. Four charter buses are being ordered, which each cost about $1,600. If the last bus is not filled, the group of students aboard that bus will not be able to go. This makes it important that enough people sign up to attend the trip.

“If you really want to go to Grad Night, you need to sign up and get your name on one of the first three buses,” Lombardi said.

The dress code for Grad Night is very strict, Lombardi advised the seniors. Students will not be allowed to wear hats, or clothing containing any offensive messages. In addition, students may not bring food of their own into the park.

With so many events heading their way, participating seniors have a considerable amount of fees to pay for.

However, “If you are short on money, there is something you can do to defray the cost: dollar for dollar, for you,” Lombardi assured the students.

On April 19, the senior class will hold their fourth car wash, in the bus loading zone, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00p.m. Students will be able to make money for their own account through car wash pre-sale tickets, at $5 for cars and $10 for big trucks and SUV’s. Students have until May 1 to make their payments for Grad Night.

After each of the staff members delivered announcements to the students, senior class president Mai See Yang and Vice President, Rebecca Serrato each took a turn to leave a word with the students.

Serrato informed about senior T-shirts, which will cost $10 each, with a $5 down payment to be made at the student activities’ window. The proceeds from T-shirt sales will also go toward the senior class account.

Carly Steen, who attended the meeting, said, “I didn’t know that much about Grad Night, so it was informational.”

If seniors were beginning to become restless about leaving their High School, the next couple of months are sure to create valuable memories that will leave them with a lasting impression of their experience at Granite Hills.

No será mucho tiempo hasta que estudiantes de ultimo año de Granite Hills se despierten con las responsabilidades que vienen con graduarse, -en solo unos cuantos meses- ahora es el tiempo para comenzar a marcar sus calendarios.  Así que, mientras estudiantes de primer, segundo y tercer año reciben una asamblea –presentando un orador motivador- el viernes, la clase de 2008 de Granite Hills se junto en una reunión informativa acerca de todo- de prom y Grad Night a becas y fechas de orientación de colegio.

Miembros de personal de Granite Hills, Sherri Shannon, Catherine May, Ann Garner y Rebecca Chavez tomaron turnos en el podio para hacer sus anuncios acerca las oportunidades y los requerimientos importantes para que consideren los estudiantes de ultimo año sobre los meses venideros.

Unos estudiantes de ultimo año están en el border para graduación, donde sus grados de ultimo cuarto  determinan si podrán cruzar la plataforma durante su graduación el 6 de junio.  En la misma situación están los estudiantes que no han pasado el California High School Exit Exam.

El examen será ofrecido que estos estudiantes lo tomen en 6 y 7 de mayo, en la cafetería de Granite Hills.  En adición, unas clases de preparación de CAHSEE será ofrecida por tres domingos seguidos, del 19 de abril hasta el 3 de mayo para ayudarles a prepararse para el examen.  Las clases serán un total de 18 horas de lecciones, divididos en seis horas por día.  Finalización de las 18 horas ascenderá a un crédito de preparatoria.  Jeff Ward conducirá la sección de matemática y Maggie Whitley conducirá la sección de ingles.

"Es muy serio si no han pasado [el CAHSEE], en verdad necesitan ir a esas clases," dijo Shannon, consejera de estudiantes. 

Estudiantes quienes no pasan el CAHSEE no recibirán su diploma de preparatoria, pero recibirán un certificado de finalización.

"Quieres tu diploma de preparatoria.  Para ayuda financiera necesitas un diploma de preparatoria.  Los militares prefieren un diploma de preparatoria," dijo Garner, Career Center Technician.  "Si estas tan cerca, de verdad quieres darle un empujo extra."

Catherine May tambien subio al podio para recordar a los estudiantes que libros tardes o perdidos necesitan ser regresados o pagados para la ultima semana de mayo.

“Estudiantes de ultimo año: regresa los libros antes que vallas a la oficina y no te den tus tiquetes para cruzar la plataforma,” dijo May, Media Director.  “Busquen en sus armarios.  No me hagas ir a tu casa.”

Porterville College esta ofreciendo un registro en el sitio, el martes 6 de mayo de las 4:30 a las 8:30 p.m., para estudiantes quienes ya han tomado sus examen de evaluación y asistido a una orientación.  El 21 de mayo, a las 4:00 p.m., un examen de evaluación se llevara acabo, con una orientación el día siguiente.

“Para los de ustedes quienes no han tomado el examen de evaluación o ido a la orientación, esta es una gran oportunidad para que vallan a PC,” dijo Ann Garner. 

PC también esta ofreciendo una beca de $400 para candidatos calificados quienes han recibido por lo menos un Grade Point Average acumulativo de 3.0.  El 10, 11 y 12 de junio, el programa PC Extended Opportunity Program Services esta ofreciendo un programa de preparación de colegio para estudiantes venideros a las 9:00 a.m. hasta las 12:30 p.m.  Este evento proveerá información importante a estudiantes venideros acerca su educación en PC.

Estudiantes también pueden calificar por una estipendio en sus pagos de libros en el semestre del otoño.  La mayoría de estudiantes de Granite Hills son elegibles para este servicio, dijo Garner.

Aplicaciones para FAFSA serán aceptadas hasta el 30 de junio.  Estudiantes quienes completen el FAFSA recibirán un Student Aid Report en el correo, notificándolos si califican para ayuda estudiantil o no.

“Asi que eso tomara unos 40 minutos de tu vida.  No es muy difícil,” dijo Garner, al animar a los que todavía no han tomado el tiempo para completar la forma.

Garner llevara a 27 estudiantes al College of the Sequoias para un evento de todo el día, incluyendo un examen de evaluación, orientación y citas con consejeros.  Con solo cuatro asientos permaneciendo, los interesados pueden apuntarse en el Career Center.  Los que ya se han apuntado necesitan completar y regresar sus papeles de permiso lo mas pronto posible para asegurar sus asientos, dijo Garner.

El tema para prom este año será Moonlight Rondavu.  Tiquetes son $30 por persona.  El prom se llevara acabo en Nucohl’s Ranch, localizado en 13144 Road 216.

“Es algo que vas a recordar por el resto de tu vida, así que junta un grupo de personas y vallan al prom,” dijo Chavez, consejera del Associated Student Body. 

Para Grad Night, este año, estudiantes asistirán un viaje a Disneyland, el 5 de junio.  Tiquetes son $88 cada uno, y incluyen una comida gratis y pase para Disneyland o California Adventure Park.  Estudiantes de ultimo año se reunirán en Granite Hills a las 3:00 p.m. y se irán a las 4:00, para llegar al parquet par alas 9:00 p.m.  El costo total para asistir el viaje será $130.  Esto incluye el costo de transportación.  Cuatro autobuses serán ordenados, los cuales costaran $1,600 cada uno.  Si el ultimo autobús no se llena, el grupo de estudiantes en el autobús no pondrán ir.  Esto hace que los suficientes estudiantes se apunten para asistir el viaje.

“Si de verdad quieres ir a Grad Night, tienes que apuntarte y poner tu nombre en uno de los primeros tres autobuses,” dijo Lombardi. 

El código de vestido para Grad Night es muy estricto, Lombardi consejo a los estudiantes de ultimo año.  Estudiantes no serán permitido usar sombreros, o ropa con mensajes ofensivos…..  En adición, estudiantes so serán permitidos llevar comida propia dentro del parque. 

Con tantos eventos en el camino, estudiantes de ultimo año participando tienen una cantidad de gastos considerable para cuales pagar.

Sin embargo, “Si estas corto en dinero, hay algo que puedes hacer para sufragar el costo: dólar por dólar, para ti,” Lombardi aseguro a los estudiantes. 

El 19 de abril, la clase de estudiantes de ultimo año llevaran acabo el cuarto car wash, en el Bus Loading Zone, de las 10:00 a.m. hasta la 1:00 p.m.  Estudiantes podrán hacer dinero por su propia cuenta por medio de tiquetes vendidos previo al car wash, a $5 por carros y $10 por carros grandes y SUVs.  Estudiantes tienen hasta el 1 de mayo para hacer sus pagos para Grad Night.

Después que cada miembro del personal entrego su anuncio a los estudiantes, la presidente de la clase de estudiantes de ultimo año, Mai See Yang, y vise presidente, Rebecca Serrato, tomaron turnos para dejar una palabra con los estudiantes. 

Serrato informo acerca de camisetas de estudiantes de ultimo año, cuales costaran $10 cada una, con un pago al contado de $5 hecho en la  ventana de actividades estudiantiles.  Las ganancias de las ventas de camisetas también irán a la cuenta de estudiantes de ultimo año.

Carly Steen, quien asistió a la reunión, dijo, “No sabia mucho acerca de Grad Night, así que fue muy informante.” 

Si estudiantes de ultimo año estaban comenzando a sentirse agitados acerca de dejar su preparatoria, los próximos meses seguramente crearan memorias valuables que les dejara una impresión duradera de su experiencia en Granite Hills.
