Violinist Michael Smith, a Granite Hills junior, has big dreams for his future. As a member of the Granite Hills orchestra and several local mariachi groups, the young violinist is steadily composing a fabulous future for himself.
 
Smith has been performing sweet, tender music on his violin for ten years now, and still continues to perfect his skills. “I am currently taking weekly private lessons in Visalia,” said Smith. 

In his spare time Smith also enjoys strumming his fingers across the strings of guitars and has just recently decided to blow a tune to the alto saxophone. However, he stays loyally committed to the violin and stated, “I would have to say the violin is my favorite instrument because it is an easy way to express myself. In the words of Andre Rieu, ‘we should give the soldiers violins instead of guns, that way there will never be war‘."

Although this musical genus can play just about any musical instrument his fingers touch, Smith does admit there is an instrument he’d love to learn to play. He said, “I would love to play the Indian Sitar Guitar.”

While his life revolves around music, Smith puts much effort into keeping his symphony of a life, balanced. “It is often very difficult at times to balance music and school at the same time, and when they are finely in balance, a lot of work is done to keep them like that,” stated Smith.
 
“I have gotten where I am because I am always trying to improve my skill,” said Smith. He also stated that “Music plays a big role in my life, it is a way for me to escape the hectic life of a teenager, and just let my feelings out.”
 
His dream goal is “to move on to bigger and better things and maybe one day play in one of the world’s greatest mariachi: Mariachi Los Camperos de Nati Cano,” Smith said, but he still continues to keep his education in mind. He said that the California School of the Arts, Redlands University, University of Southern California, Cal State Long Beach are among a few colleges he has in mind.
 
Although Smith has a phenomenal talent, he said there has been a few times where he has doubted himself. “There were a couple of times when I felt like I wasn’t good enough and I really considered giving up, but after some serious thought, with out music it would seem like a part of me is missing.”


Smith enjoys playing Jazz/Blues, Mariachi, and Classical genres of music. “There is no better feeling than when I pull out my violin and play the sweet and sexy, Mexican melodies, or of when I sit down with my friends Bach, Mozart, and Strauss, and play their sophisticated melodies.”

El violinista Michael Smith, un estudiante actualmente asistiendo Granite Hills High tiene gran sueños para su futuro.  Como miembro de la orquestra de Granite Hills y otos grupos de mariachi incluyendo; Mariachi Fiesta Mexicana, Mariachi Nuestra, Mariachi Estrellas de Guadalajara de Ruben Ramos el Hiroito, el violinista esta gradualmente componiendo un futuro fabuloso por si mismo.

Smith ha estado tocando música dulce en su violín por diez años, y continua perfeccionándola.  "Actualmente, estoy tomando lecciones privadas," dijo Smith, en las cuales maneja a Visalia semanalmente para practicar.

En su tiempo extra Smith también halla tiempo para tocar guitarras y recientemente decidió tocar el saxofón alto.  Sin embargo, se queda lealmente cometido y dice, "Tengo que decir que el violín es mi instrumento favorito porque es un modo fácil de expresarte.  En las palabras de Adre Rieu, 'debemos dar violines a los soldados en vez de pistolas, así nunca habrá guerra'."

Aunque este genio musical puede tocar varios instrumentos musicales, Smith admite que hay un instrumento que quisiera aprender a tocar.  Dice, "Me encantaría tocar la guitarra "Hippy," no estoy segura del nombre, pero me gustaría tocarla."

Mientras que su vida gira alrededor de la música, Smith pone mucho esfuerzo para mantener su sinfonía de la vida, equilibrada.  "Muchas veces es difícil equilibrar la música y la escuela a la misma vez, y cuando por fin están equilibradas, es mucho trabajo mantenerlas así," dice Smith.

"He llegado adonde estoy porque siempre estoy tratando de mejorar mis habilidades," y por su , "dedicación y queriendo ser lo mejor que puedo ser," dice Smith.  Pero también que la música toma un pedazo importante de su vida, "La música juega un papel grande en mi vida, es un modo de escapar la vida agitada de los adolescentes, y dejar mis sentimientos salir."

Alcanzando la meta de sus sueños  "para progresar a cosas mas grandes y mejores y quizás un día tocar en uno de los mariachis mas grandes del mundo, Mariachi Los Camperos de Natil Cano," Smith dice, también continua manteniendo su educación en mente.  El dice que la "California School of Arts, (Cal Arts), Red Lands University, USC, Cal State Long Beach" están entre las pocas universidades que tiene en mente.
 
Aunque el talento de Smith llega como un ritmo fenomenal, el dice que han habido pocas veces en las cuales se a dudado a si mismo.  "Hubo pocas veces que sentí que no era lo suficiente bueno y de verdad considere renunciar, pero después de pensarlo seriamente, sin música seria como si perdí parte de mi."
 
Mientras el mundo de música continua creciendo, muchos músicos ambiciosos se exaltan y la competición se mantiene intensa.  Sin embargo, Smith aparece tomar la competición de modo positivo.  "Cuando conozco a alguien quien es un músico mejor, trato de aprender de ellos," el dice.

Smith disfruta tocando Jazz/Blues, Mariachi, y Classical géneros de música.  "No hay sentimiento mejor que cuando saco mi violín y toco las dulce y sexy, melodías Mexicanas, o de cuando me siento con mis amigos Bach, Mozart, y Strauss, y toco sus melodías sofisticadas."
