Marissa Martinez is the new HOBY recipient.

Granite Hills counselors chose a new Hugh O’ Brian representative on November 30. This year’s HOBY attendee is Marissa Martinez. She was chosen out of 11 sophomores. HOBY is a program designed to help high school students become better leaders in their schools and communities.

As its name suggests, HOBY was developed by Hugh O’Brian, an American actor. HOBY started in 1958, after O’Brian’s inspirational visit with the famous humanitarian Dr. Albert Schweitzer. One of Schweitzer‘s beliefs was that the most important thing in education is to teach young people to think for themselves. That is exactly what HOBY is about.

Thousands of students this year will attend HOBY workshops. One sophomore from each school is chosen to go. Students must first receive a nomination from their counselor, and then write an essay on why they should be the one to attend HOBY and what makes them a good leader. The essay turn-in deadline at Granite Hills was November 5.

HOBY is dedicated to providing a fun, inspiring, and leadership skill building program. Motivational speakers and community leaders will be present at the conferences to help the students on their paths to become great leaders.

“I really enjoyed HOBY. It was a super fun experience and I got to meet so many new people! Even though I didn’t always agree with the opinions that were presented to me at the conference, it was nice to be intellectually challenged by other strong academics from around the state. One thing that I enjoyed especially was the fact that no one was necessarily trying to be better than anyone else. We worked together. We laughed at our mistakes and did our best to achieve success together,” said past attendee Tracy Harriger.

Last year's recipient was Samuel Salinas, but he was unable attend so his alternate, Juliane Write, attended the conference."I felt honored and happy to be chosen to represent Granite Hills at the conference. The HOBY Conference is a once in a life time experience and I was so glad to have experienced it. Hugh O’ Brain is a very inspirational leader, and knew this conference would help me better my leadership skills and self-esteem."

From March to June, over 70 HOBY conferences will be held. These seminars are three to four days long. Martinez will be able to attend one of these conferences.

This year's candidates were Morganne Burchell, Natalie Congdon, Zachary Contreras, Joel Jacuinde, Zoe Kisling, Martinez, Elena Pena, Esmeralda Silva, Lupe Tapia, and Brianne Wagner. The candidates were interviewed on November 29. They were asked questions including "What famous person would you like to meet and what would you ask them?", "What makes you a good leader?", and "If you could pick a worldwide issue to fix what would it be?"

The next day, Martinez was announced the winner. Natalie Congdon was the alternate.

"At first I was nervous about the whole interview, but because of the Grizzly Gazette and my sports history I was pretty used to being relaxed and just speaking my mind in general. My competition on the other hand was really really good, and everyone I was going against had a lot to offer HOBY," said Martinez.

“I couldn’t be more proud of my daughter. She works really hard in school and in sports. I know that she does her best in everything she puts her mind to,” said her mother Norma Lisa Martinez.


Sometime this school year Martinez will be attending a HOBY conference. If she cannot go or chooses not to, Natalie Congdon will go instead.

Los consejeros de Granite Hills escogieron a un representativo el 30 de noviembre.  Este año la asistente de HOBY es Marissa Martinez.  Ella fue escogida de 11 estudiantes de segundo año.  HOBY es un programa diseñado para ayudar a estudiantes de preparatoria a llegar a ser lideres mejores en sus escuelas y comunidades.

Como su nombre sugiere, HOBY fue desarrollado por Hugh O' Brian, una actor americano.  HOBY comenzó en 1958, después que O' Brian tuvo una visita inspiradora con el famoso filántropo Dr. Albert Schweitzer.  Una de las creencias de Schweitzer era que la cosa mas importantes en la educación es enseñar a jóvenes que piensen por si mismos.  Eso es exactamente de lo que se trata HOBY.

Miles de estudiantes este año asistirán seminarios de HOBY.  Un estudiante de segundo año de cada escuela es escogido para ir.  Los estudiantes primero tienen que recibir una nominación de sus consejeros, y después escriben un ensayo sobre porque deben ser el que asiste HOBY y que lo hace un buen líder.  El ensayo tenia que ser entregado el 5 de noviembre.

HOBY se dedica a proveer diversión, inspiración, y a construir habilidades de liderazgo.  Oradores motivadores  lideres de la comunidad se presentaran en la conferencia para ayudar a los estudiantes en sus caminos para llegar a ser gran lideres.

"De verdad disfrute de HOBY.  Fue una experiencia súper divertida y pude conocer a tantas personas!  Aunque no siempre concordé con las opiniones que se presentaron en la conferencia, fue agradable ser intelectualmente desafiada por otros académicos de todo el estado.  Una cosa de la cual especialmente disfrute fue que nadie estaba tratando de ser mejor que otra persona.  Trabajábamos juntos.  Nos reíamos de nuestros errores y hacíamos nuestro mejor para juntos lograr éxito," dijo Tracy Harriger quien ha atendido HOBY en el pasado.
 

El recipiente del año pasado fue Juliane Wright.  Cuando le preguntaron acerca como se sintió ser escogida, ella dijo:

"Me sentí honorada y contenta de ser escogida para representar a Granite Hills en la conferencia.  La conferencia de HOBY es una experiencia que llega solo una vez en la vida y estuve muy contenta de poder experimentarla.  Hugh O' Brian es un líder inspirador, y sabia que esta conferencia me ayudaría a mejorar mis hábitos de liderazgo y creer en mi misma."

De marzo a junio, mas de 70 conferencias de HOBY se llevaran acabo.  Estos seminarios son de tres a cuatro días.  Marissa podrá asistir a una de estas conferencias.

"Primero estaba nerviosa de ser entrevistada, pero por mi historia en el Grizzly Gazette y en deportes estaba acostumbrada a estar relajada y hablar lo que siento en general.  Mi competición en la otra mano era muy buena, y todos tenían mucho que ofrecer a HOBY," dijo Marissa.

"No puedo estar mas orgullosa de mi hija.  Trabaja muy duro en la escuela y en los deportes.  Se que hace lo mejor a su habilidades en todo lo que se propone," dijo Norma Lisa Martinez, la mama de Marissa.

Durante este año escolar, Marissa asistirá a una conferencia de HOBY.  Si no puede ir o decide no ir, Natalie Congdon tomara su lugar.
