Granite Hills High school was full with new young faces as they attended the second annual “Night of Welcome” and open house on Wednesday, March 26. Students and teachers welcomed the incoming freshmen and parents with leis for the night, which was held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

The night’s purpose was to let incoming freshman catch a glimpse of what they are going to be doing for the next four years. Future freshmen walked around the campuses looking at classrooms and booths to see what they were interested in.

“I came so I could know the school,” incoming freshman Anna Ramos said, who is currently attending Bartlett Middle School.

Ramos said that she looks forward to going to Granite next school year.

Parents also got the chance to look around the school to see what it is about. They look forward for their children attending this school.

One parent, Marcie Medina, has the choice for her daughter to go to Granite or go to Porterville High School. She came to this night so that she could know Granite Hills more and make her decision.

“We got the invitation in the mail,” she said. “I really want my daughter to come here.”

Incoming freshman and parents were not the only ones invited to the night, but the whole community as well. This idea came up because the administration wanted a bigger turnout than last year, which, according to Principal Veryl Ann Duncan, was a success.

“We had a great turnout,” she said.

The evening began with dinner, provided by the Booster Club, at 5:30 p.m. Touring of the school started at 6:00 p.m. Students from different clubs volunteered to work in the classroom and the booths demonstrating  to the future freshmen what they do.

“I’m just in the club and I just want to help out,” LOC club member Francine Sanchez said, who helped out with Mrs. Nelson’s Book Fair, a small book store held in the library that night.

Entertainment from various music and dance organizations from Granite was held in the amphitheater from 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The purpose of the entertainment coming from the school’s music and dance organizations was to emphasize school talent. Entertainment includes orchestra, choir, and folkloric.

Principal Duncan was very happy for the night overall. She considers “Night of Welcome” to be a successful night.

“I just want to thank all staff and everybody who helped make it a success,” she said.
