Young residents got a chance to learn cheers last Saturday as they participated in the 2008 Granite Hills Cheer camp for young girls on Saturday, March 9. This year's theme was "Cheer Like a Pop Star!"
This day serves as an annual fundraiser for the Granite Hills cheer department. Parents pay $35 for their children to participate in this camp and learn a routine and then perform for their parents at the end of the day.
This year, 143 girls signed up for the cheer camp. According to cheer adviser Mindy Boyer, the number of camp members increases every year. Six years ago, when the cheer camp began, there were 20 girls signed up for the camp.
Accorder to Boyer, Granite Hills was the first school to establish the cheer camp for young girls. Porterville High School also had a cheer camp the same weekend.
One girl who attended the camp, Olivia Alacron, has been attending the Granite Hills camp for the last four years.
“I like it better,” Alacron said, she said as she was referring to Granite Hills.
Alacron currently attends Roche Elementary School and plans on attending Granite Hills and become a cheerleader.
"[I come] to practice all the cheers," camp attendee Alyssa Bauer said.
The young girls were taught their dance routines by their group leaders, cheerleaders from Granite Hills. It was mandatory for the cheerleaders to attend the camp.
"I like to see the little kids smile," Granite Hills cheerleader Ashley Bates said.
The camp started at around 9:00 a.m., where the young girls would begin to learn their dance routines. Two bounce houses were put up so that a group could take a break from learning the dance routine and go play in the dance house. Lunch was served at about 12:00 p.m. And after that the girls continued to rehearse.
At about 2:00 p.m. each group performed their dance routine for their parents. The groups were separated by age: the four year olds were called the Tiny Tots, the five to six year olds were the Cubbies, the two seven to nine year old groups were called the Bears and the Cubs, and the 10 to 12 year olds were called the Grizzlies.
“I think [the girls] did great,” Boyer said.

The Grizzly cheerleaders worked very hard for two weeks preparing for the little girls’ camp, and it showed. The little ones had a great time and the parents were all excited to see what their children had learned at the end of the day. Great day, girls! You represented Granite Hills High School in an extremely positive manner. Thanks to Ebony Bailey for coming out to Granite on her Saturday to take pictures and hang out! It was a fun day for everyone involved!
