Granite Hills’ students will be getting ready to give blood at the biannual Associated Student Body blood drive in Wednesday, March 5. The blood drive will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

The blood drive is sponsored by the Central California Blood center, which has been serving the San Joaquin Valley for more than 50 years. It is responsible for distributing, processing, and drawing blood for Fresno, Madera, Mariposa, Tulare, and King Counties.

They have Bloodmobiles in which they bring to various companies, schools, or organizations.  Schools who wish to have a blood drive can call and schedule an appointment for one.

The goal for the school is to get about 100 pints each blood drive. ASB adviser Rebecca Chavez predicts that Granite Hills will meet this goal again this blood drive.

"We always get about 100 kids willing to donate," Chavez said.

Chavez feels that it is good for every student to try to donate blood.

"It's just a good community type project that kids can do for the people," Chavez said.

Two of the requirements for students who want to donate blood are that the students have to be 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. Students who are 17 have to permission slip signed by their parents. All donors must present photo identification and a Social Security number at registration.

Students who donate get a free t-shirt. They also get snacks and drinks.

But the students do not want to give blood for just the free t-shirts and snacks.

"It doesn't hurt to give just a pint of blood, because you know you can save a life," blood donor Gina Cha said. "It might not seem like a lot to someone but it might seem like a lot to someone else, it might make a big difference in someone else's life."

This is Cha’s first time donating blood, although she is excited, she says she is kind of scared.

As for the people who are receiving the blood, and their parents, they are very grateful for the students giving blood.

“As a parent with a child who was diagnosed with leukemia, I realize that the gift of blood is the gift of life,” English teacher Evan Hackett said.

It is still not too late to sign up, so students who wish to donate blood can pick up a registration form in room 816.

“Siempre tenemos aproximadamente 100 niños dispuestos a donar,” dijo Chavez.
