ARC bowling league meets in Porterville

Bowlers from all over Northern California gathered at Porterville Lanes for their first of three annual tournaments on Saturday, Jan. 19.   These bowlers belong to the Association for Retarded Citizens Cal Bowling League, an organization that allows people with disabilities to bowl with others of their same capacity and skill.

ARC was founded in 1950 by a group of concerned parents, along with other individuals concerned about the development of people with disabilities.   They hoped to change the public's attitude towards disabled people and to create services for those who had been denied daycare, education, and work programs.

"We work to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families have the support they need to live an ordinary, decent American life," stated ARC supporters.

Along with bowling, this program also holds other events, such as dances and basketball. Many of the athletes that participate in these events are recruited to be in the Special Olympics such as Jim Schultz, who attended this bowling tournament in Porterville.

On Saturday, approximately 70-80 bowlers were present.  These bowlers were divided into seven divisions according to their mental capacity and bowling skill.   Due to physical disabilities of some of the participants, two of the divisions were assisted, meaning that they either had guide rails, starters, or an assisting person to facilitate their bowling.

Participants of all ages from the local high schools, state hospitals, homes, and independent care were invited to this event, even if it was just to watch.

"It is and excellent program for all who are disabled," stated Al Mandel, who has been the director of ARC Bowling for 20 years.  "These kinds of events help the disable build social skills and confidence."

The winners that will go on to the next level will be announced at a banquet that will be held at the Visalia Holiday Inn on Saturday, Jan. 26.
