Ralph Nader of the Green Party announced his bid for president as a third party candidate on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Feb 24.

Ralph Nader criticized candidates of both parties and pledged to “shift the power from the few to the many” (FOX).

“You take that framework of people feeling locked out, shut out, marginalized and disrespected,” he said. “You go from Iraq, to Palestine to Israel, from Enron to Wall Street, from Katrina to the bumbling of the Bush administration, to the complicity of the Democrats in not stopping him on the war, stopping him on the tax cuts,” (FOX).

Nader, 73, said the American public is disenchanted with the Democratic and Republican parties due to the Iraq war and a faltering economy. He claimed the Bush administration has driven the lower- and middle-classes in debt.
“In that context, I have decided to run for president,” Nader told NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday, Feb. 24 (FOX).

Nader criticized both party’s candidates, Republican candidate John McCain and Democrats Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton, for not supporting full-coverage Medicare for all, and for not cracking down on a “bloated military budget” (FOX).

He said corporate lobbyists and special interests corrupt and dominate Washington, D.C., and promised to only accept contributions from individuals.

“The issue is do they have the moral courage, do they have the fortitude to stand up to corporate powers and get things done for the American people,” Nader said on the show (FOX).

Governor Mike Huckabee and Republican presidential nominee commented that Nader’s past runs have hurt the Democrats in the general election. “So naturally, Republicans would welcome his entry into the race,” he said (CNN).
In 2000 Nader won 2.7 percent of the national vote as the Green Party candidate.  In 2004 he only appeared on the ballot in 34 states when he ran as an independent. He received only 0.3 percent of the vote.

“I think its sheer lunacy that he’s running. He knows that he took votes away from Gore and helped Bush win in 2004.  Now he’s going to siphon votes away from the Democratic Party candidate and help McCain,” said Evan Hackett, English teacher at Granite Hills.

I think this is great. It's the American way. Anyone who meets the qualifications can run for president. It should never be a two person race. If he takes votes from a certain political party, then that just means people within the party aren't happy with their candidate. That candidate, or his/her party, should fix the problem. Besides, the problem isn't in who or who doesn't run, it's the apathy the general public has when it comes to voting. People need to quit complaining and get out and vote. Otherwise, we will keep letting the minority of the population control what takes place in our country.
