Granite Hills Choir and music production presents Les Miserables
Valerie Jasso| 04/08/08 | Fine Arts

Mark your calendars because on Wednesday, April 9, 2008, Granite Hills’ Chamber Choir and Music Theater class team up for the first time ever to present Les Miserables (act1). The performance will be held at the Frank “Buck” Schaffer Theater in Porterville at 7 in the evening. This a one time showing. The entry fee is $5, but if any Granite Hills’ student is willing to sing a song to Ms. Efseaff, the choir teacher and director, the student will get a discounted price at 3 dollars.

Les Miserables is a French play that was written in 1980 based on Victor Hugo’s 1862 novel. With characters such as a paroled crook named Jean Valjean whose failing attempts to find work as an honest man, makes him breaks his parole and forces him to hide his identity in order to live a free life; the police inspector Javert, who becomes obsessed with finding Valjean; Fantine, the single mother of Cosette, who is forced to become a prostitute to support her daughter; Marius, a French student who falls in love with Valjean's adopted daughter Cosette; Eponine, the young daughter of the Thénardiers who is hopelessly in love with Marius, the line in which they are connected never seems to end.

This is Music Theater’s first major performance and they have been hitting the scripts hard, rehearsing since the end of February. Chamber choir followed a bit after, starting right after spring break, which was at the end of March. “I have heard them practice in the morning, at brunch, and at lunch and I’m really excited to see how it all comes together and pays off.” Says Nate’ Edelman, a Granite Hills student.

The $5 donation they are asking in for entry will go directly to the Vocal Department’s funds. The funds go toward scholarships for graduating seniors, for awards given to students at the end of the year, to buy music rights, and all other things that the Vocal Department may need.

“I just hope that everyone does their best, I want them to enjoy what their doing. It’s suppose to be fun; it’s suppose to be enjoyable and I just hope that every single one of my students comes away with a positive, incredible experience from this.” says the encouraging director and choir teacher Ms. Efseaff.

Granite Hills Choir and music production presents Les Miserables

Everyone in music theater and in chamber choir have work[ed] hard to make this all come true. And that’s not all. Some students from our school have also taken the time to come and help play extras in the musical "Les Miserables" as well. So I just say thank you to everyone who made this come true and a special thanks to the choir director, Ms. Efseaff.
