In 1929 the first Academy Awards Show, other words known as the Oscars, was held at the Roosevelt hotel in Hollywood, California. Since the earliest years it seemed that the interests in the ceremony was running high but as the years progressed passed 1998 people had been loosing that attraction. According to Nielsen Media research this year’s ratings for the Oscars were the lowest they had ever been; 14 percent lower than the record low in 2003. This year’s rating was only 21.9 meanwhile the average for this show runs in the 40’s.
The 80 th Academy Awards show took place at the Kodak Theater in Hollywood on February 24, 2008. The memorialization was overflowing with unknown winners which helped toward that huge fall down to the bottom of the scale. The crime thriller No Country for Old Men was one of the biggest winners on Sunday night and took four Oscars including Best Picture, Best Director, Writing (adapted screenplay) and Best Supporting Actor. Diablo Cody writer of Juno walked away with an Oscar for best Original Screenplay. Daniel Day-Lewis Starring in There Will be Blood won for best actor in a leading role. Then, Best actress in a leading role went to hidden but talented, Marion Cotillard who played a French songbird in La Vie en Rose.
“I didn’t even know that it was airing yet,” Said Kayla Caraballo. Even through one of the hardest attempts for publication many still did not know of the date, venue, or nominees for the award show this year.
People from small towns make up a huge portion of the viewers who tune in to the award show each year. Many people in towns, such as Porterville, have not seen or even heard of theses movies, because the theaters choose not to play these films, due to lack of space. Because of this the ratings will continue to decrease.
When most viewers heard titles or saw clips of the nominees and winners they were stunned to find out that they were not nearly as familiar with them as they had hoped. Anamaree Martinez stated that she “honestly didn’t have any interest in watching the awards this year. If they didn’t show half of the movies in our theaters why pay any attention to the awards they are recovering.”
No Country for Old Men was released on November 21, 2007, and will not be released on DVD until March 11, 2008. There will be Blood had just made its debut in picture houses on the eleventh of January, not giving of the audience time to view the film. Juno, a movie thats film is still rolling in theaters seemed to slip through and win an award as well. La Vie en Rose, the longest released, had its seal broken on June 8 of last year. Even though it had been let out earlier it was a foreign film which meant it was still unseen by many of the viewers’ eyes.
The Oscars are at all time low and seem to be getting lower as the critics and ordinary viewers/people tear at them because of the lost interest. Unseen Movies, unknown actors and unheard music has seemed to have made its way into the Academy’s heart, while the Academy has been pushed out of the community’s agenda.
