I Am Legend starring Will Smith
Valerie Jasso| 02/04/08 | Review
In “I am Legned”, Will Smith stars as Robert Neville, a brilliant scientist who is racing to discover a cure for a man-made virus, as humanity comes crumbling down all around him. The viewer finds that he, as well as 1 percent of the population, is for some reason immune to the highly contagious super bug. Now the entire population of New York City and by chance the world has been transformed into flesh eating carnivorous bloodsuckers who fear the light and live solely to spread their contagion to any remaining living creature that crosses their path. Neville's psychological state is one of the main elements in the picture, and his struggles with the weight of finding a cure, the death of his family and of his beloved pet dog, flood the character with intensity and gravitas. The author emphasizes that he is an ordinary, flawed man trying to deal with an extraordinary catastrophe.
Where other films rely on inventive shooting, this one is able to depopulate the world and ravage the big city with the aid of computer - generated imagery . Although the digital effects have a few sketchy moments, they enable director Francis Lawrence to create a chilling vision of a Manhattan populated by only one healthy human. The post-apocalyptic city is first introduced with a lack of thriving city noises: no cars, no horns, no yelling, just birds. Times Square is a meadow, ivy twines its way up the walls, plastic sheeting flaps on buildings, and the bridges connecting Manhattan to the rest of New York are all destroyed.
“I am Legend” was b ased on the classic horror novel by Richard Matheson, which was published in 1954. It is actually the third adaptation of this book. The first two being a 1964 Vincent Price thriller, “The Last Man on Earth” and the 1971 Charlton Heston action film, “The Omega Man.” Matheson's novel also served as the inspiration for George A. Romero's zombie classic “Night of the Living Dead.” The novel takes place in Los Angeles, and the then-future of the years 1976-1979. Much like in the movie Neville is fending off the infected survivors of a devastating virus but instead of becoming flesh eating zombie-like creatures, the virus has turned the population into bloodsucking vampires. Every day he also makes repairs to his house, boarding up windows, stringing and hanging garlic, and disposing of vampires' corpses on his lawn. The two are extraordinarily alike.
“I am Legend” starred Will Smith as Robert Neville the scientist and the legend. The rest of the supporting cast consists of Salli Richardson as Zoe, Robert's wife, and Alice Braga as a survivor named Anna. Willow Smith, Will Smith's daughter, makes her film debut as Marley, Neville's daughter. Emma Thompson has an uncredited role as Dr. Alice Krippin, who appears on television explaining her vaccine for cancer that mutates into the virus. The movie opened in theaters on December 14, 2007 although originally scheduled for a November 21, 2007. It was rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi action and violence throughout the movie and has a running time of on hour and forty minutes. The film brought in approximately $251,650,000 throughout the U.S. and about $514,150,000 world wide.
