As I Lay Dying

The metal band As I Lay Dying originally started out as a trio formed in 2001 by vocalist Tim Lambesis. After leaving his first band, Society’s Finest, Tim sought guitarist, Evan White, and drummer Jordan Mancino. The three men became As I Lay Dying and signed with indie label, Pluto Records while barely a month into their new career. They soon entered the recording studio and recorded their first album, Beneath the Encasing of Ashes, which was released in June of 2001.

After many months of touring and an extensively growing fan base, AILD signed with the popular metalcore label, Metal Blade Records. Soon enough AILD grew with the addition of Jason Krebs playing guitar and Aaron Kennedy playing bass. They released their second full-length album, Frail Words Collapse, which introduced a whole new sound. They were once labeled an indie band and soon became Christian metalcore. With singles like, “Forever” and “94 Hours,” their name became well known. After the release of that album, they toured with bands such as Hatebreed, Himsa, and Killswitch Engage. Frail Words Collapse went to be the one of Metal Blade’s best-selling albums, selling over 210,000 copies.

When their touring came to an end, they began releasing music videos for songs “94 Hours” and “Forever,” which got heavy play on the popular music stations such as FUSE and MTV. They were also the number one downloaded band on website MP3.com. After Frail Words Collapse released, bassist Aaron Kennedy left for personal reasons and was replaced by the band’s good friend Clint Norris.

In January of 2005 they returned to the studio to record their third full-length album: Shadows Are Security. Before its release, guitarists Evan White and Jason Krebs left the band. They were soon replaced by Nick Hipa and Phil Sgrosso. Soon enough, As I Lay Dying began touring once again to support the release of their new album. AILD had the opportunity to land a spot on the second stage of the popular heavy metal tour, Ozzfest. They played alongside metalcore bands like The Black Dahlia Murder and Bury Your Dead. Soon they joined the Taste of Chaos tour which included bands such as Thrice, My Chemical Romance, and the Deftones. Unfortunately, after they completed these tours, bassist Clint Norris left the band on good terms to focus on his marriage. Now exposed to an entirely different crowd, AILD got back to their roots and jumped on the Sounds of the Underground tour, which featured metal bands like Cannibal Corpse and Evergreen Terrace.

In the beginning of 2007 AILD began recording the newest album, An Ocean Between Us, with new bass player Josh Gilbert. It was released on August 21, 2007. As I Lay Dying was kind enough to allow their listeners to preview the entire album on their MySpace page, four days before it was officially released. They also promoted their new album by playing the 2007 Vans Warped Tour throughout the summer.

With songs like “Nothing Left,” the first hit single on the new CD, showed that As I Lay Dying could achieve new heights and go back to their music roots in metalcore music. This CD may be bought or heard on their Myspace at www.myspace.com/asilaydying or their band website www.asilaydying.com.
