Cast of The Real Orange County
The "real" Orange County?

It was summer 2006, and devoted fans of the past 2 seasons of Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County turned their televisions to Music Television, anxiously awaiting the premiere of season 3. It was a cast of all new people, and MTV had a challenge to create another cult like reaction to the series. Fans sat through the season, watching outplayed drama scene after outplayed drama scene, many of them seeming acted out and rehearsed. Needless to say, the show was a dud, and MTV was left with a challenge to recreate the show many people loved. This led to the 2007 season premiere of Newport Harbor: The Real Orange County. But would it make up for the flop of season 3? Most likely. Will it be anything like the original? Well, its future is cloudy.

The show follows around students of Newport Harbor High School in Newport Beach, California. It is narrated by senior Chrissy Schwartz, and follows her to every party, dance, and vacation. Oddly enough, it never follows her to school, which never really made sense considering the show is named after the school as opposed to the city.

Newport Harbor, like all teenage drama shows, has each cast member depict a certain teenage stereotype, possibly in hopes of relating to more viewers, but mostly, to entertain. The Real Orange County series claims to be 100 percent real, yet, it has had to endure rumors about how it’s actually a scripted show. The first season dodged some of those accusations, being the original show. The fourth season will not do so. Many of the scenes have become highly suspicious, and do not seem authentic at all.

Newport Harbor is 3 episodes in, and already the show has highly overplayed the main topic in most of its situations, dating fiascos. Schwartz has been flirting casually with junior, Clay Adler, but he has also caught the attention of senior, Allie Stockton, who is also interested in ex-boyfriend, Chase Cornwell, who is suddenly interested in Schwartz and so on.

Highly original MTV, well done, as if the random circle of hookups hasn’t been incredibly overdone by about every drama TV show, let’s add more to the cliché. And how incredibly coincidental is it that Schwartz goes on a date with Cornwell, while his enemy, Grant Newman is on a date with Cornwell’s most recent ex-girlfriend, Taylor Geiney, and Adler is left home by himself, calling Schwartz.

MTV is deserving of applause for somehow finding a group of kids that can switch who they’re dating all at the same time. To think the critics question if scripts are written for the teens to act out is incredibly insane, or maybe not so much. Though there are times when the question crosses if the show might possibly be a little more realistic, it is soon reminded that it’s more than likely not. But was that not expected from a station obviously misnamed as music television?

“I think it’s scripted because yeah, there is drama in high school but it isn’t back to back to back like the show is,” stated Granite freshman, Jenny Taylor. Other Granite students thought the show was unreal also. “I think so, because the way things happen in the show,” said Regan Lentzner, a Granite Hills Junior, who still claims to love the show either way.

Like Lentzner, many fans are fascinated by Newport Harbor. Why shouldn’t they be? The season is just another carbon copy of every other season, just with a new location and new faces. All the episodes lead to memories of past episodes, and suddenly it’s like surprise, this episode was in season 1 and 3. The show is supposed to seem relatable and of course, many teens find it as relatable as season 1. Well of course it is, the show is exactly like every other season of The Real Orange County series.

All together, if the past 3 seasons have been an obsession, this season will be no different. The show will make up for the season 3 flop, and possibly entertain as much as the past 2 successful seasons, but it will not be original, authentic, or real. If it is teenage drama being sought after, this show may possibly fulfill those desires. If it is reality, or even entertainment wanted, this show really shouldn’t be considered.
