The Punk the Halls Tour, featuring five contemporary bands, came to Porterville on Thursday December 6, to host an electrifying show of musical entertainment, with a touch of holiday spirit. The event, held at The New Life Center church, at 2012 W. Morton Ave., gathered a diversified audience of approximately 500. The ecstatic crowd included a broad range of ages and interests. Staff representatives from KDUV and the online radio station, Remnantmusic- both partial sponsors of the event- greeted and sold merchandise to incoming guests.
The five bands hosting the evening were, Our Hearts Heroes, Eleventyseven, Manafest, Nevertheless and Stellar Kart. The church fundraised for the event by selling food throughout the year.
The New Life center invested about $4,000 dollars into the event, said head pastor, Dave Mast. With the help of promotion from local radio stations and 17 collective sponsorships, the function became a success.
“[This is] a great opportunity to show kids that Christian music is just as good as other music,” said Mast. As far as the turn-out, “we met expectations. [It was] very successful,” he added.
Youth leadership pastor, Jessica Vitella, said, “I think it’s wonderful,” that so many people came. Having almost sold out on tickets, she feels the attendance, “show[ed] great support for the Christian Community.
Where adults and youth alike spent the evening in the main building, engaged in the bands’ infectious energy, a nearby building held those either wanting to seek refuge from the high volume to socialize, or to beat the post-show rush to purchase their band-affiliated merchandise from any of the five booths.
Lauren Messer, a band member wife, spent the evening selling Stellar Kart merchandise. Being on tour with the band has been “very exciting,” she said, while adding that the audience that turned out for this show was, “great.” Going along on the bands’ tours has been nothing new to Messer, as she finds the experience to be an enjoyment. “There are 12 of us on the bus. It’s really exciting,” she said.
Our Hearts Hero drummer, Jeremy McKnight said, “[being on tour] is a blast. [We] get to meet crazy guys.” The band member added, after performing, “The kids are awesome. I think they’re crazy nuts. [They] were a great audience and they were having fun.”
Jerrod Turner, who hosts the night show for the KDUV radio station in Visalia, was surprised with the attendance. He expressed that it was more than he had expected, as he is usually present for community concerts that KDUV promotes on an average of four times every month.
In response to the fact that the New Life Center was able to host the event, Turner said, “I think it’s cool. It says something neat about this town and this [church].”
“[The show was] very exciting and the bands had a great time. They want to come back,” said Mast. The church and youth group proceeds will continue to be saved up in order to fund for another show in the future.
