Grizzly Band Earns Superior Rating

The Grizzly Band earned a Superior rating, last Friday, March 7 at the CMEA Festival. Monache and Porterville bands also earned Superior ratings.

The Grizzly Band was the second band to play on Friday. Their first piece was “Blue Ridge Saga”; an exciting piece full of fast pace runs. This song also has a trumpet solo played by Reed Mankins.

The second piece was “Ballad for Peace”; a slow medley, with a melody mainly played by the trumpets.

The third piece was “America Exultant”; a march that starts with the trumpets playing a loud fanfare. This piece involves several fast runs and several sharps and flats.

After the band finished playing their pieces, they went to go sight read music. Sight reading was a new addition added to the CMEA festival. The Grizzly Band received a 1 at the sight reading part of the festival, which is the highest rating a band can receive for this portion of the festival.

Beverly Congdon, a senior at Granite Hills High School, says, “the band seems to be improving greatly. The new band director is doing some great things.”

Grizzly band also has a concert coming up in May. The band will like to have you come out and support them.

Yeah!!!! Woo!!! You know the band rocks your socks!!! I am the tenor sax in the band!!! The Granite Hills band is really progressing with the new director, Mr. Rexelle. He has a lot in store for us. By the way this year is going, hopefully each year will progress and maybe [we] will have a strong music program here [at] Granite Hills.

I am so proud of our Granite Hills band! For being such a small band [that] has hardly had a chance to be recognized, I'm proud for the all band members to be able to accomplish any kind of award. Without their dedication and faith, despite being trashed by other insanely large high schools, they proved that that no matter the size of the band, it’s the quality that counts. With that I give the band two thumbs up for sticking together and winning themselves an acknowledgeable title.
