The Fall of Babylon
Christin Gamez | 03/05/08 | Mega Noise
"The only thing that really inspires us to do anything is God,” said Josue Popo Gutierrez, who is the guitarist from The Fall of Babylon. The band began in May of 2004 with the founding members Josue Popo Gutierrez, Kristian Marrodan, who also plays guitar, Alex Marrodan who is the drummer, Edgar Fernandez, the bassist, Daniel Verela, who is the singer, and Jeffery Shepp, who does the backing vocals. The band started up in Oxnard and Camarillo, California. They grew closer to each other by going to shows together, going to church, and experiencing high school.
The Fall of Babylon started of with playing 80's metal, a very big change compared to what they are known for playing now. “Our first show was awful; we still sucked at that time,” explains Josue Gutierrez “We were very off and not even close to solid.” It wasn’t until early 2006 when the band began to grasp their own sound and really stick to it. “We can’t really say honestly we have any kind of specific style,” added Josue. “[There is] so much influence from other types of music has really brought [our] band to become its own.”
Each member has been in other bands before TFOB, but they were just little projects that did not make it outside their own little safe garages or houses. Some of the members like Josue played in Skare Tactic for awhile and Alex Marrodan played for This Moment for a great amount of time. The Fall of Babylon has played in towns such as Corona, Lindsay, Oxnard and Washington. With each show they have played they gained more fans and friends. They played with bands such as Zombie Knife Fight, Shiny Toy Guns, Of Love and Wrath, Bury Your Dead, Bloodline Calligraphy, The Warriors, Acacia Strain, Parkway Drive, and A Day to Remember. Despite their publicity, they have only made an EP “The beginning of the end” and demo, which they left to the kids as their good bye gift. Razorblade Printing made the TFOB t-shirts; the band was also endorsed by Deathstar drums and was working with Monster Energy drinks.
“Before our official break up,” said Josue, “the last few shows were really good, real intense shows that we [ever] played. They really [made] our break up a fine goodbye.” Their reasons for breaking up were among common reasons that most bands come to; the challenge of actually growing up. Vocalist Jeff Shepp had married and had a child, both vocalists and the drummer moved to Columbus , Ohio for various reasons. Their other guitarist, Kristian Marrodan lives in Hollywood which made it costly, money wise, to drive to band practice. "A friend is the hope of the heart." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson, I guess that quote best suits us,” said Josue. “Even though there’s a big separation between us, we still need each other for that drive, for that hope in so many things and aspects of life. Any day with each other was a good memory, but I guess the best one is when we all crammed in a mini van and drove eighteen hours straight to Washington, for the first time it was just us, we had three days of just us that was probably the best time because it was just us you know!”
Showing the love and passion of what they did they left a mark on so many kids such as, Josh O. “Honestly they are dope (in a good way), not just as a band but as people too. They are really respected guys in and out of the music scene and really stand for what they believe.” TFOB left an overall positive message and still showed the kids some pretty brutal music. As for a reunion, “we don’t know were we'll be, just have [to] see where God takes us,” said TFOB. The reunion might be a challenge considering that they are all so far apart and have all begun their own lives, but they are still going to stay in touch with the fans on their band myspace “thank you for being interested, GOD BLESS!” said TFOB.
