About Us

Granite Hills High School, which opened in 1999, is one of the 21 schools in the Porterville Unified School District. The community of Porterville is located in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Central California. Granite has a population of 1365 students, 85 percent of which qualify for free or reduced price lunches, making GHHS a Title I high school. GHHS offers 14 AP classes for college bound students, such as AP Psychology, AP Art History, and AP Environmental Science. The Granite Hills Academic Decathlon Team has been the Tulare County winner for five consecutive years and has competed at the California state level for each of these years. The CyberQuest team has been Tulare County champions for three years.

The Grizzly Gazette is 100 percent student designed, written, and managed. It is posted daily Monday through Friday. The online version is completely redesigned in Dreamweaver at the beginning of each school year, making sure each new class learns the process of web site design and maintenance. Approximately 40 students are involved in its daily production. The staff members carry on their daily activities during two periods of journalism and produce the online Grizzly Gazette with eight computers. The Grizzly Gazette has been recognized as a 2006 National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA) Online Pacemaker Finalist, and as a winner of the 2007 NSPA Online Pacemaker Award.
