My Grandpa
by Allison Bowser | 2005 Optimist Essay, Area First Place, District Third Place
Can one person make a difference in people's lives? Of course he can! One person who stands out indefinitely in my mind is my Grandpa Bud. Of course, I have many family members who are important to me, but he has a special way about him that makes me believe that one person can make a difference.
I can always remember climbing up on my grandpa's lap when I was a little girl, and asking him to read a story to me. If I didn't want him to read then I wanted him to tell me the story of Rindercella . I would always say "Please, Please, Grandpa tell me about Rindercella just one more time." The story of Rindercella is a somewhat backwards story of Cinderella. He always had time for me and he hardly ever got angry with me.
I remember one of the only times he actually did get angry with me. My sister and I were playing in mud that he had told us not to. He got angry at us, but not for long. Soon I was just as happy as before and playing games with him. He always had time for me. My grandpa never said, leave me alone right now I'm working. There was always time to show me the tractor, or to take me on one of his walks.
Grandpa is the pastor of our church. This has had a huge impact on my life because he always stresses the importance of our family. He has given our family a large spiritual aspect in our lives. I have heard him speak of how important it is for him to create a legacy in our lives. Even if his great, great, great grandchildren do not remember him, he knows that the spiritual legacy he has left behind will stay with them forever. That, I think, is what is most important to him.
When people say, no normal person can have power, they have to be great like Ghandi, or Martin Luther King Jr., I simply know that they have never met my grandpa. He has already created a legacy that I know will be passed down many generations by my family.
This is what the power of one means to me. It means one person, thing, or place that can change your whole life forever. It could be Abraham Lincoln, Paris, a special time, or someone like my grandpa. I would not want to go through life never knowing what my grandpa was like. He has been such a blessing to my family and me. He has changed my life, and made it better by being here.
